K-9 handling

Hey Guys,
I got a possible oppurtunity to get a '09 K-9. I was wondering how the handling is on them in both the slow speed turns and normal road curves. I used to own a '04 AIH Texas Chopper so I know all about the raked front end and wide rear tire. The Texas Chooper was kind of a bitch when turning slow and it needed more room in the twisties. The dealer tells me the K-9 is 100 times better handling then the Texas Chopper. Also, for the guys that ride two-up, how is the ride with a passenger? Do your ladies complain or is it comfortable for them? I currently have a '09 Mastiff and a HD Night Train and I am thinking of going with a K-9 as my only bike. Reason for this is because I can only ride one bike at a time and choppers kick ass!! I just don't know if I should give up my Harley.

IMO, get rid of the harley...everybody has them...they make a lot of noise and go really slow. Step up and get the K9...there is no comparison between the K9 and any Harley. Just my .02

I don't know compared to a Mastiff, but My K9 rides and handles better than my FXDLI. You do have to get a larger turning area cause of the long wear base. And you get used to that with in a few rides. good luck!

Oh and cornering? It rock! Not a Crotch rocket, but it get's er done fo sho!

Loose the harley I did,is just sat after buying the K-9.I had my scepticisums.after owning the K-9 I wont go back. The space the driver and passenger have is more than my electrta glide had.I got so comfortable cornering the K-9 I started scraping pegs.Ride with 2 up quite often and more stable than Harley.I got back on harley after 3 months and I could not ride it.I flopped it over in the yard. The k-9 will swing wide but you can go so slow around turns its so well balanced. In the curves it does like to go strait because of the 300 tire, but you push the bars and it will follow your orders.

Have a 2003 FATBOY anniversary edition – it gets out just a few times a year. Great bike, always fires up, never misses a beat – rides like a “toy” compared to the others….

The ’07 K9 limited edition - I love the black tricked out bike. Have tons of mods to the bike and this one rides like the wind – I LOVE IT, handles GREAT, rides even better – forget about L@@KS – this is what I call SEX ON WHEELS.

Now about the ’08 Mastiff – SPEECHLESS…she is SPECIAL!!!!

Did I just confuse the hell out of you?:lol:

Conclusion - It’s the family analogy – and I can’t love one child more than the other...too attached to all of them, each one unique in their own way and always a pleasure to ride.

If you MUST make a choice...YOU need to do that based on what works best for YOU....all said and done based on MY RIDING STYLE I like the K9...and I ride solo. Best of luck.

Im with Staffy...

I have a few...love them all and do not agree to unload the HD.......two different animals....if you can keep more than one you should.....

IMHO

The K9 handles really well riding single or 2-up. I enjoy the ride more in the twisties than straight away riding. Slow speed is different but nothing to worry about. You'll be used to it in a few hundred miles. I put over 1,000 miles in the Ozark mountains in four days with the wife on the back. She has rode 400 miles in one day. She does complain but not about the K9 :D

I rode my buddy's AIH slammer and definately think my ridgeback is a hell of a lot more comfortable. I had an 01 Roadking I bought new but sold this year because I after I got the Big dog, I just never rode it anymore and when I did, I felt like I was on a tricycle. Riding two-up: My wife hates it (no shocks) but other than her complaining in my ear, I couldn't tell she was back there.

I've put over 35K between two K9s in just under 4 years. Had a 500+ mile 2-up day with a gal and no complaints. Many other 2-up days with other ladies and they loved it (and me too!)

The bikes have cruised through Lolo Pass twice and Beartooth Pass 5 times. Rides incredibly well in the twisties; won't take it like a Ducati but handles them very sportily.

Fear not how it is going to behave in the corners but instead fear how much you are going to love riding it above all the other bikes in your stable. Keep 'em all if you can, why choose just one girlfriend?

The K-9 is fine you just have to get used to it. Once you do, the Harley will feel like a minibike in comparison. As for two up, it depends on the girl, but I do a shitload of two up riding and don't get much in complaints. Bottom line is that if the girl doesn't like to ride, she's going to complain no matter what you put her on.

Thanks guys for all the replies. I don't know what to do now. I know I should have bought a K-9 to begin with but coming from the Texas Chopper I owned I knew of the raked front end and the handling issues. But I love the feel of sitting down into a bike and having the gas tank and bars raise up in front of me like a chopper does. I don't get that on the Mastiff. Has anyone rode a Texas Chopper that can compare it to a K-9? My wife loves to ride and she doesn't complain much but I want her to be comfy.

Ask Curdog (JJ), a member here and I ride with him.

He traded in his Mastiff for a K-9 and said the K-9 rides and handles MUCH better than the mastiff.

Rick, the BDM truck driver, said in his opinion, the Mastiff is BDM's worst handling bike. And he has riden them all. He was putting on and helping with the test ride event at the local dealer a few weeks ago.

Another members wife was dead set on buying a Mastiff and settled on a K-9 in Daytona and took it home.

I think you will really like the K-9 if you have riden a Texas Chopper.

I agree with Staffy.
When people ask me what it is like to ride my Big Dog, I tell them "it is like sex on wheels".
I had a 2007 Harley Night Train, I really like the blacked out look. I was really bummed when I sold it. But I didn't know any better at the time.
Now I have a 2004 BDM Chopper, solid black paint and chrome. I don't miss the night train even the slightest bit. After riding the big dog you will see that the harleys are under powered and just make noise.
I love canyon rides and the dog does great through the twisties. I don't think I really scrape in the turns much more that I did on the softail. But is a low slung long as chopper so scraping the pegs isn't hard. I have big feet so the heels of my boots are ground pretty good from the turns. For fast sharp twisties you need something sporty, but they just won't pull like a Big Dog. I can't help but smile and feel my heart race a bit every time I crack the throttle and hold on for dear life.

Oh yeah, I would also say (probably obvious though) Harleys are overpriced and just not worth it. I got my Night Train new for about $20k, I got my Big Dog used in like new condition for $10k. In this economy I would look for used and it will be hard not to find a good deal. Pretty sure my next bike will be another Dog.

I've ridden both the K9 and the Mastiff. I ended up purchasing the Mastiff because it better suits my riding style. That said, I was amazed at how well the K9 handles. I had no problems turning and the bike was very well balanced. You can't go wrong with a K9 if you decide to buy.

Thanks everyone for your input and suggestions. I should have gotten a K-9 in the first place. Now the dealer is telling me he will take my '09 Mastiff and '06 Harley as trades for a K-9 he has on the floor. Three things I'm having trouble believing, a '09 Mastiff lost that much value in less than six months, my Harley ain't worth crap and a new K-9 is that expensive.
