vibration noise 2008 k-9

I have 2008 k-9 with 3k miles. Vibration noise started about one thousand miles ago. Comes on at 2700 rpm. Does not affect handling or engine performance But is so loud that it nearly drowns out sound from Vance and hines 2 in one pipe.
Any ideas where to first look???? Thanks..

I would start out by checking all motor mounts. Is there a specific sound?

What kind of sound is it? Metal vibrating? I guess you have already felt around for anything loose. Have you checked your motor mounts, tightened your exhaust pipes (including your bracket holding the pipes to the side of the bike)? Does it sound internal, e.g. gears, clutch, primary chain? Need a little more info. Does it come from the front, rear or motor?

Comes from the front and engine area. . Sounds like major engine noise but performance ok. Had broken support bracket holding V and H exhaust which has be re welded but that was not the source.Continue to have some shifting problems that Big dog dealer has not resolved but I do not think that is the source. How many engine motor mounts and torgue values? Yes a metal vibration almost like a metal cable housing vibrating against a metal gas tank. Thanks

I remember a post that RayWood had not long ago about a rattling noise. Ended up being inside his gas tank. I forget the name of the tube/hose that is probably some EPA bullshit for the west coast. I'll pull up his thread and give you the correct name, but if you look inside your tank, it's attached to the fill.

hate to suggest it but check the vent tube in the tank. when mine broke it sounded real bad at certain rpm's.

but like you said, you were due for a rebuild.

The thread was called, "Marbles in motor". You can search it if you like. After completely tearing down a motor, Marv suggested that he check the vent tube inside the tank. Sure enough, that's what was making all the noise, and only at certain RPM levels. Just something else to rule out before getting too deep. You can see pics of this on that thread.

Sounds like the vent tube for sure. Use the search function and search broken vent tube and you will get 6 or 10 posts on it.

When you remove the gas cap you will see a tube just at the bottom of fuel hose stop. Small 1/4" tube. Tap it with your finger. If it moves thats your problem. Quick fix. JB weld. Just around the top of the tube, not inside. Let it dry for 24hrs before you ride again.

If you need to ride sooner I think some of the guys broke it out. Or even put a screw in the end of it to keep it stationary. But the JB would be the best route.

I'd suggest inspecting tank bushings. Inspect the front of the fuel tank where it sits on close to the frame's back bone and look for any signs of contact. Try duplicating the noise while the bike is stationary to verify this.

Check your hose clamps on the V&H heat shields also, they will loosen up from time to time.

Clamps on your exhaust if you still have the stockers on there, mine did the same thing. Noise drove me nuts would only start after 2500 rpms. its not very loose but just enough! if you dont have stockers what everyone else said!

Big Dog chased a similar sound on my bike that I always swore was coming from the front jug. Turned out to be the spline on the altenator slipping on the teeth. It made a hell of a noise at times, especially when it was hotter.

This just happened to me, took me a couple of months to figure it out. My tube broke from the bottom side of the filler neck so I have no idea how it would have been possible to J.B. weld it. I used a magenetic tool to pull it up enough to grap it with some pliers, pulled it up as far as I could, then broke it by twisting it back and forth like you would a clothes hanger. The tube is still connected in there somewhere but it's out of the way and no more noise.

I had a vibration in 5th and 6th gear along with a loud squeek and it turned out to be the upper motor mount was really loose.

It may be the gas tank mounts. I had a vibration noise for months that no-one could find until Myrtle Beach Bike week. The Bigdog mechanic there test rode my bike and just put pressure on the tank by pushing to on side and the noise went away. It only happened when the tank was either full or getting near empty. Anyway, they replaced the tank mounts under warranty and the noise and been gone since.:2thumbs:

When i look down into the tank there is no tube at all and looks like there never was. Did they eliminate the tube on the later models(2008 K-9), or is my laying in the bottom of the tank back towards the seat
