Big Winter Build

My winter build project is as follows, all parts on order.

Carb: Mikuni HRS48 Carb with Doherty adapter
Intake: Whimmer 90 degree with HPF-1 filter
Cam: Woods W6HF .650 with W188 springs
Ignition: Thunder Heart
Heads: T-man Performance stage I with cometic gaskets, zero deck with projected compression 10.8:1
Exhaust: RB Racing 2:1

I was almost sold on the XXX untill a lengthly discussion with T-man who convinced me to go with the Mikuni. He said for this build it will work the best, hands down.

I planned this as a winter project due to ordering the exhaust from RB racing, as they can take a very long time.

I will keep this post updated and post a dino when this project is complete.

Sound good, Good luck on you build up. Oh BTW you forgot one thing with all that power you may want to consider a seat Belt

Nice choice of add on's you might want to consider upgrading your clutch to handle the power, I used a Banditt Clutch.
Also my R&B 2 into 1 racing exhaust took only 3 weeks from time of order to delivery.

This is why I like to post plans for modifications, to get input. Others perspectives and experiences can be valuable. I actually forgot that the stock clutch can be a little weak. Thanks for the heads up.

It is found that the stock motor with .600 cam, exhaust and XXX carb will slip the stock clutch bad.

Better get a Bandit Clutch and Bandit Billet Carrier as well.

I disagree, I and plently of other guys run the 600 cam with XXX and the stock clutch. No problems...

I am still running the stock clutch in mine and hammer it pretty regular with no slippage thus far. It make 128hp and 140 tq. I have had some internals of the transmission go south but the clutch is standing tall. It is the second clutch and I have 15K on the bike. BDM lost the first clutch when it was sent to them is why it has been replaced.

I see nothing wrong with waiting to see if the stock clutch will hold. If I run into issues I can always upgrade. Bandit quoted me $440 for the clutch and carrier. If I can avoid spending an extra $440 I will.

Thanks for all the advice and input thus far.

I picked up the Mutt yesterday from the mechanic. The build is 80% complete. I am just waiting on the NOS kit to ship since it is on back order. The only down side is that I didn’t have the thunder heart ignition installed since the NOS programmer will piggyback some of the wiring. My mechanic didn’t want to have to do the same work twice, which I understand. I can tell the cam added a ton of torque. The motor feels like I could pull tree trunks out of the ground. The exhaust has a great sound, kind of radical compared to the V&H BR. I wish the pipes would have been cut 6” shorter like I had requested though. Does anyone know if it is possible to cut a pipe without damaging the chrome finish? Either way, they look good. The intake sticks out slightly further then I thought it would and my leg will brush it when applying the rear break, not a big deal, just different then I am used to. I cannot wait to have the build complete and tuned. This thing is going to be a beast. I will post pics when I get time. I have a crazy work schedule, but very thankful to have a job.

Good deal Toad. Get us some more clips of the bike when you get a chance too. Try to get one on the dyno. I always liked the dyno clips.

have fun with the new power toad.
no you can't cut the pipe without wrecking the chrome

Cutting the pipe with minimal chrome damage can easily be done with a high speed cutoff wheel. However you paid alot of money for the performance of an RB pipe, which cutting "x" inches will affect the torque and Hp. Better ask RB about this they are better equipped to answer tham most since they built it for your application. On the carb size, I also went with a 48mm Mikuni and have a little bigger motor than you, The bike runs fine but the big diiference was at wide open throttle. I found that a well tuned 45 Mikuni gave me better all aound performance (throttle response). Are you using a plate or injected NOS system?

agree about the pipe. RB are all about performance and pipe length plays a big part in that. Leave it alone would be my suggestion or you are defeating the purpose of buying that pipe.

I'm running a "130+-" motor with a lot of John Sachs upgrades :

The heads have been reworked with 2.250 Intake valves and plenty of porting + milled a little bit for some compression.
