homemade baffles...

just curious if anyone has made a set of them baffles consisting of an eyelet screww and bolt and washer and placed them in a set of vance and hines...and if they did did it help with noise and decel pops .......and did it deepen the tone...seems as though vance and hines all have more treble then bass,i had a set of BUBS on my softail before rhinehardt came aboard and that was without a doubt the baddest sounding pipe i have heard..cause of the deep tone...just wondering if its possible to make oranges outta apples

Hey jimi, what you're talking about is refered to as a "lollipop", and they have been used for years. Most of the time they are used to increase back pressure to the head for better exhaust flow. It's simple fix, just take a fender washer that has a smaller diameter than your exhaust pipe and weld it to the head of a suitable bolt. Then drill a hole on the backside of the exhaust pipe about six to eight inches from the exit end and put the washer/bolt on the inside.

Then, add a nut to the outside to secure it in place.

Next you tune it by adjusting the angle of the washer inside the pipe. 90 degrees is the most pressure you can get, and the pressure is reduced as you lower the angle. This should help with the decel pop and maybe even get the sound you want.

Keep in mind I'm doing this on large 3" collectors on different 2 into 1 pipes. On my Stainless Creations drag pipes I have the Thunder Monsters in. These washers don't change sound or quiet it down that I've noticed.

Right. However, the washer needs to occupy a larger percentage of the inside diameter of the pipe in order to "tune" it by adjusting the angle of the washer.
