revisiting oil

After our charity run this past Saturday, before my ride home I noticed a small puddle of what looked to be and felt like oil under my bike. The more mechanically skilled GasMan said it looks to be coming from the starter gasket. When I drove it home it seemed to be a bit hot but I attributed that to just being a hot day. I didn't touch it Fathers Day but I checked it today and it was a little over a half quart down....I hope I didn't do any damage to it and what is the total capacity of oil these motors hold?

It was motor oil and not primary oil? I know it was dirty and oiley under there... that's why I suggested cleaning it off a bit...

The motor holds 3 qrts of oil.

yep, no more of the oily finger dipping...LOL, dipstick is there all right but don't know how much good it does when they don't tell you if you should measure it while on the stand (like my last Harley) or when you stand the bike up!!!!

Thanx for the info Blitz and GasMan. At least next time I'll know where and what to look for.
Yesterday I ended up trailering it to a dealer being as it was raining and still under warranty. I'll let them deal with whatever it is.

Mine doesn't say that. I always check it on the lift upright.

Thanks guys, Chopper Dave, mine says nothing under the seat or on the dipstick top, just as Thumpers...But I have been checking it on the stand just as I did with my Harley.
