V&H BR baffle removal, need help

I bought the BCT baffles and had intended to install them today,

However, the V&H baffles aren't coming out. Yes, I removed the heat shield and removed the one bolt that appears to keep them in, but the upper one isn't budging. I dont have a slide hammer, but have "hooked" a piece of steel on the nut inside and was able to pull damn hard on it as well as tapping my hook (same action as slide hammer, but not as much force).

Is there a trick to getting the V&H baffles out?

Richard

By the way, the bike is cold. It occurred to me getting the pipes hot might be the ticket.

i shot alot of THE BLASTER stuff up there(wd 40 on steroids) let it sit for awhile and hooked large vise grips to it and hit the vice grips with a hammer,it took alot but eventually i got it out

I have those and spoke with the owner of Big City Thunder on how to remove. My pipes were new so they came out fairly easily.
Get a HEX HEAD BOLT the same size/thread count as the screw that holds the baffles in.
Screw the bolt in the hole (that the screw that holds the baffle in is supposed to be in) FROM THE INSIDE OF THE BAFFLE as much as you can without going so far as to screw it into the outer exhaust pipe.
In your case-saturate inside of pipe/baffle with Blaster, Liquid Wrench, etc.
Use the largest diameter boxed end wrench you have and can fit into the exhaust pipe and "loop" it over the bolt you screwed in and try to keep the wrench close to the "bottom" of the hex head bolt.
Now start "yanking" back and forth. You will hopefully have a 1" or so size boxed end wrench...and the (pardon me) "jerking" back and forth action should loosen the baffle for removal. Whip it like Skippy was a bad boy! Good luck.

I barely got mine out with a slide hammer and the bolt in backwards as Ratman said. They get stuck after some miles.

ALSO you may be may be able to use vise grips or something on the part of the boxed end wrench sticking out to "twist" back and forth slightly. Breaking it loose will be the hardest part.

I wanted to let everyone know that if you buy the right tool, it slides right out.

I went to NAPA and bought the big slide hammer they have ($85.00). It has a hook attachment that goes right thru the middle of the baffle and catches on the opposite end. It took me at most 6 slides to get the baffle out and it's not damaged.

Maybe this will help someone else in the future, at least that's my hope.

BCT baffles. Here's the lowdown: not as loud as no baffles, probably louder than V&H baffles cut in half. For my taste, just right...

The other thing is if you get a ticket for loud exhaust, I have been told that in Oklahoma, you must run an unmodified commercial baffle. Well, this will supposedly work if it comes down to a ticket and court. (time will probably tell whether this ends up being true in all cases).

The bike runs just as strong, maybe a hair better on the top end. And this is with no change from the V&H BR jetting that was done.

Just ride it with out the bolt. Prob fall out in a mile or so:D
I thought about this before you posted it and came to 2 conclusions
1. if the baffle falls out, it will be too hot to pick up and save
2. If someone behind me ran over it and had a wreck or damaged their vehicle, I could be sued.

The way I got it out worked perfectly anyway (only the top one was stuck)

I had a set of BCT Monster baffles in some Samson exhaust on my previous motorcycle and they were great. They provided just enough back preasure to improve performance on the top and bottom end over the baffles that I had in before them (maybe they just mapped easier though) but they had a great sound that was less ratty then no baffle.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking for some alternative to the stock kerker or how to get a little more "bark" out of it.

I run their BCT QQ baffles and just over 1/2 of V&H baffles. Good sound and keeps neighbors at bay. (Lots of covenants where we live).

The last time I had to remove a set of baffles from a V&H Big Radius and being the cheap bastard that I am, I found a good heavy coat hanger and cut a section off, made a hook on the end. Slid it up and hooked onto the baffle, set a pair of vise-grips on the other end and sprayed the baffle with some lube and took a rubber coated hammer and tapped against the side of the vise-grips. Sure it slipped off a couple of times, just re-hooked the baffles in another place so the baffle would not get into a bind. Never had any problems removing a baffle using this method, think of this as:
2wheels tip of the day........

Take a Iron rod, grind at ones side a hook wich hangs nin the Baffle holes.
Cut a tread on the other side.
Bring a moveable weight on the rod.
close with disk and mother.
With this Impact weight and quick, fast strikes it will come out.
Exhaust warm and the first baffle holes hooked in it, baffle will come out.
Done the same with my V&H big radius.
love them but must Change to quiter ones….
