I'm not a Big Dog owner, I have an American Ironhorse Texas Chopper but I cannot find help anywhere. I figured they both have S&S motors and are close in style.

I have an '04 with a 117 CI. I started it up to ride 4-5 times last Friday. Started fine the first 4 times. Not so much on the 5th. Seems like I have plenty of power, when I hit the start button it just gives me a "whizzing" sound. Like somethings spinning but aint catching. Any suggestions on where to start (no pun intended)?

Thanks in advance for ther help. I'm sure I'll get some heckling as well but that's part of the game.

Ha Ha Ha (sorry you said don't laugh)

Welcome and you might want ot do a search on "Starters" there is a lot of info on cleaning maintenace etc. If the starter is turning but not engaging might be the selonoid. also check the obiovous. Battery cables clean and tight, battery charging and keep it on a battery tender. Your engine should be a non emmision which I think is 10,2-1 compression

Your starter has a "pull in" solenoid. It's spinning, but not pulling in to engage the ring gear on the tranny input. :)

If you can find an Alternator & Starter repair shop near you, they should be able to help. If I remember correctly, some of these starters are duplications of a "Toyota Starter" if I'm correct. Some parts are interchangeable, but if it's too bad, you'll just have to brake down and buy a new one.

I had the same problem and it was the starter clutch. Eventually it will not start at all.

Take it to a starter/alternator place and have them rebuild it. Cost me about $120 at the place here in Austin.

I hear that it only took your mechanic about an hour to replace yours on the Mastiff.

DaltonGang-
There is also a good section on how to start your bike in here too. This can save your starter a lot of extra work. Do not pump or prime the throttle before your start it that can increase the compression considerably and is not necessary.

Good Luck-
If your near Austin PM me I'll pull it and put it back for cheap $40 bucks if i don't have to dick with an oil bag.

Mongo,

My understanding is to make sure that the THROTTLE is not cracked open at all while engaging the starter. This can create unneeded compression. I usually give my pup a few rolls on the throttle before I start it. This keeps me from messin with the enricher.

Might be doing it wrong, but this is what works for me.

Welcome Dalton, we have many AIM owners here and you are more than welcome here also. Post a picture of your bike and tell us about it and you.

Lots of good recommendations here already for you to get started but I would say your battery is weak (how old is it?) or your solenoid needs cleaning. Keep it on a battery tender at that big motor of yours takes a lot of juice to start. Check the "How To" section on starters and solenoids

Welcome to the site,
Ray

You got my vote on this one!

If the "whirring" sound is from the starter motor spinning that rules out the motor itself and solenoid...
