Exclusive. American Iron Horse Motorcycle Closing Its Doors
Published by Cyril Huze February 4th, 2008 in Editorial, Customs and Builders.
Sad news at a time where we are in Cincinnati celebrating our love for the V-Twin industry. American Iron horse was the main competitor of Big Dog Motorcycles in the market segment of "production custom motorcycles". Follow the confirmation I received from one of their employees. " American IronHorse closed its doors officially this past week. Laying off pretty much everyone with the exception of a couple of big salaries. Employees were told possible return in march but nothing definite . This during a 2 week layoff already in place. Doesn’t look good".
This might help make anyone decide which one to buy ...... John

I've had my 2008 BD Mastiff for about ~3 weeks and I, too, looked at Iron Horse (thought I was in love with the Slammer for a while) and I came really close to getting a Bandera but... then I saw the Big Dog and it was love at first sight. I'm not a big fella by any means, 5' 6" when I spike my hair :D and sitting on this Mastiff was just perfect. The feel of the handlebars, the seat, the rake, the everything... it was just my bike....

So I bought one. My wife knew it when I saw it... she says "Yep, I know it's awesome..." and it is...

Still getting used to it, little nuances only, but I love it and I don't regret the choice...

Yes New Zealand NOT Australia, well corrected Raywood. I have 5000 miles on my bike now and issues so far are.

1. Trans seal leaked
2. Has Progressive Air ride and the oil shock leaks a tad

Apart from that the bike is excellent. Service from AIH head office on the other hand is ratshit and I can see how they are close to or have closed there doors due to the piss poor backup.

I still believe there bikes are of excellent quality for a production custom.

Some dealers (the one's that have bikes on the showroom floor) are telling people that everything is fine...they are still getting parts and getting paid. Enron swore to everyone, including it's employess that "everything would be ok this was just a glitch"...this is typical of a company breathing it's last dying breath.

Hello all. I am new here and I to own a AIH. Found a smokin deal on a new 05 LSC and just had to pull the trigger. So far the bike is awesome. I am installing some Hooker Troublemakers this Saturday. Anyway I like both BD and AIH. I just could not pass on the deal I got on my LSC. I love the look of this bike. It is very well balanced. I knew AIH was in trouble money wise and may close but for the price I can be my own warranty station.

The first time I saw a Slammer was when I knew I was going to have a nice "production custom" (still hate that term) one day. I just didn't realize at the time that the longest I would be able to wait was a couple of years and that I would completely lose interest in the Slammer and AIH like I did. Even now you can see such a huge difference in the companies just from their websites alone. One is dynamic and complete and busy with new info and all sorts of things whereas the AIH site is a quick rehash of the same static skeleton it was a year ago with no online shopping or anything useful of any kind really other then a few pics of bikes and the paint you can get on them. It didn't help that when I started looking my local dealer for AIH helped me cross them off the list right off the bat by telling me they were actually already out of business but he'd be happy to deal on the leftover stock.

I'm glad they're "back" and I hope they can start growing again. It would be nice to see them and some of the others like Big Bear Choppers and Ruckers return strong and build some outstanding products for us to choose from in the future.

I have owned two BD & one Iron Horse, the AIH was the best looking of all, and the later BD & the AIH had one thing in common, electrical problems. If I knew what I knew now, I would have kept the AIH and rewired it like I did my BD. If it has a warranty, then go for it.

I like the looks of some of the AIH's But they have been an on again off again company for the past 5 years sort of like Indian Motorcycles. I remember trying to get parts for my Indians back when they went out of business. To this day 20 years later they are still sitting in a shed in Illinois in pieces. AIH seems to me to be headed towards the same financial down fall as Indian did. I found BDM's about 10 years ago when they opened a dealership here in Saint Petersburg Florida. Went and checked them out and have wanted one ever since. As luck would have it I picked one up last year as a trade for my speedboat. Even with all its little quirks I love it and it would take allot to make me part with it. Choose what ever feels right to you. Sit on them both and if possible take one of each for a test ride. If it feels right to you then buy it. Good luck and enjoy your new ride.
