Tranny Oil Leak

Does anyone have information on pulling the primary in order to get the transmission out to change seals ? I have searched, but didn't find anything. I would really like to do this myself instead of sending it to the shop. I have already PM'd "Nelson" about the parts, but still need to know if this will be as simple as it seems to be.

Will any year work ? I have access to one that covers 1970 models. Is it too old or do I need one around the same year as my dog ? 2004.

I'm not sure if that old of a manual will help. I would think 90's and up will. Someone will know. I'm sure gas man will.

You can get a service manual for your bike from Nelson, or even eBay. Do yourself a big favor and get one, then you can print the thread on primarys and add it to it. Also, you can get a S&S service manual that will help you.

I'm sure Alhall can correct me... but I would say a manual for a 2000 or newer big twin HD would work. But if you are going to order a manual, why not just order a big dog version?

I just finished pulling the primary to change the pulley and found the harley manual to be very helpful. THe 04 BDM manual is for the most part worthless for this. I just downloaded the electronic version of the 07 Softtail manual.

Yeah I have the BigDog manual and it sucks. Best thing in there was the wiring schematic, and you can get that here. Getting the primary off is cake. Drain it, pull the cover, pull the front pulley, the 2 big clutch side nuts are reverse thread. Motor plate comes off with just a few bolts. I needed a special tool to get the bushing off the tranny mainshaft, but I'm not sure if you need that off to change the seal. When you put the front pulley back on, make sure you use plenty of red locktight and a high quality impact gun. A pulley locker is helpful, but there are alternatives you can make yourself.

O.K. Thanks. I downloaded the 2007 softail service manual and it looks like it should be allot of detail on the primary. Along with the info here, looks like it shouldn't be too bad. It was free so I'm glad I didn't waste allot of money on the Bigdog manual. Haven't read through the whole tranny section yet, but I still haven't found anything specific on the tranny seals. Anybody have expierience with them ? Do you have to comepletly disassemble it to install the seals ?

Can you tell me where I can get the wiring schematic on this site for my 2004 Big Dog Chopper?
