FORGET LOOKS WHAT IS THE BEST AIR CLEANER FOR MAX PERFORMANCE??
Truthfully, the one you have. S&S put 50 yrs into designing that backing plate. It has the horn around the entrance to the ventura and this is what all copy.

If anything you can add a K&N filter or even the extended kit.

I wouldn't put the stock paper filter back in. I would go with a #E-3226 K&N filter instead.
If you really want a the stock one I still have mine all but slightly used that I will send you.

Quick question...if I go w/the K&N filter-I will have to remove the small ear on the base plate so as the filter fits secure. This being the case, why did BDM design the back plate with the extended ear

To my knowledge it doesn't have anything to do with BDM. It's an S&S thing. Maybe they wanted additional surface area for there paper filters for better flow. Don't know but I'll tell you the K&N fits the cone shaped plate tightly like you would think it should fit. Cutting the tab is very easy too!!
