got stuck. wouldn't start. Had to push start the dog

Went to go out on a long ride with some friends tonight. On the way to meet up with everyone I stopped to top off on fuel and I when I went to start it, the dog seemed like the battery was dead. I checked all connections and everything looked good. Battery was new about 6 months ago. As I was looking at the starter I saw a crack in it about an inch or 2 long. And the wierd thing was when I went to crank it the starter did not engage but make noise but not spnning and it would not start, I had to turn the key off to stop it. I tried it a few times and everytime it did that. Oh well after a few times of pushing it and cursing up a storm it finally started and I rode home. Where is a good cheap place to get a starter for a 05 chopper? Is there any aftermarket starters that are beefier or stronger or do we have to get them from BD.

I just tried to take some pics of the starter and crack but you couldn't see the crack in the pics. maybe when I pull the starter out tomorrow I can take a good pic. Its not cracked where it bolts to the inner primary, its cracked on the top of the starter itself where it bolts to the piece that bolts to the inner primary. ( if that makes any sense) I can't see how long the crack is but I can grab the starter and wiggle it. Just got off the phone with John Sach and he has a new starter in stock for me. Hopefully I can fix it tomorrow night and be up and running.

Guy on ebay sells lots of Dog parts and has a new starter cheap on their, seen it yesterday. One of these guys will post a link to it because I'm not smart enough to figure that crap out,,

i saw a few on ebay, used reman for $100 and new bd ones for $235. John has one for around $150 and I can get it tomorrow. seems like that will be the quickest and a great price.

I broke one a couple years ago on a ride with Knotso. I believe it was mis-aligned if possible. On start up it would bang into the starter ring.
The eBay seller has them on all the time. Or you can call Nelson for a factory one. They are rebuilt so may not cost as much as a new on.
But your bike requires a specific one so you can't just go down to the Harley shop and get one.

Pretty easy. Remove the right side cover and pipe/s if you have to then disconnect the battery (mandatory). Then remove the green plug and the two cables then remove the two bolts from the starter and wa laaaa!!

I thought with the compression release the starter did'nt have to work near as hard. Not really sure.

Yea it is pretty easy to install raywood. I had to replace the starter once before 2 years ago. But then I got ripped off by thunder cycles price of around $400

Yeah, that seliniod really pushes on the starter ring. It was banging in pretty hard the prior couple stops for gas. Guess it finally gave way.
Same as what Neil is experiencing right now. This starter was just put in the bike too when replacing a leaking one. BDM covered it as usual though! :2thumbs:

well guys i just had the same problem... dealer had no idea but did supply me with a new ring gear and different starter housing...took it all apart...clutch and starter...found nothing. put it together and the banging went away. go figure
