I have a 2008 K9 EFI. What can I do to make it run better, without going inside the motor? I did the baffle thing with the big radius, I put the screen on the front of the air cleaner, I ordered a K&N, but the bike seems to lag. It feels so restricted is there anything I am missing? Would doing the 600 cam thing really be worth the $$?

Any help or advise is appreciated:hi:

its all on what you want to spend$$$
I have the S&S Desperado cleaner with the K&N filter....and last spring I had the .600 cam installed(I already had the .640 springs in my bike) and that really woke the bike up....pulls nice and sounds ignorant!:2thumbs:

The 600 cam gave me a seat of the pants improvement, worth the investment...mine was pretty cheap though.

Next thing I am going to do is bump compression.

why don't you just start by having your fuelling remapped. I'm guessing it is set up from the factory to meet emissions standards. A performance pipe and air intake system is also a good bet.

how do you remap...I thought they were a sealed deal?..I have done the pipes and the cleaner. How much is the cam dealio? Not sure if I have the right springs or not, whats the worst case scenario as far as $$? If I did the cam would this be a good time to port and polish the heads? I'm not a gear head but it seems like that wouldn't hurt. Money is always a concern but sometimes you do what ya gotta do:cheers:

your best bet is to read through the performance threads. You will find almost everything you need to know in them as between us there isn't much we haven't done and reported back on.

And you will get the same thing in your thread here. You might want to read up in the EFI section too!

I see you are in California. What are you allowed to do or do you have to do the sniffer test and so on.
I can give you some ideas but need to know your limits.
Beautiful bike by the way.... Your EFI will learn own it's own to a certain extent and it is locked per say at the factory...for the most part anyway..
You really need to pull your rocker box covers off and see what springs you have to start with. I would guess, nothing more than a guess that you have the single wound .585 lift beehive springs.....Look and see if you have roller rockers or the stamped flat rockers.... S&S roller rockers which you want for any kind of cam is going to set you back $500 or so to boot. You really need to know what you have first before your dreams carry you away...
Take a couple of pics and post them here and everyone will tell you what is happening with what you got and some options to think about....
Enjoy your ride....:2thumbs:

the trouble with that is that the right way to go for one person will not necessarily be the right way to go for someone else. You need to decide what you are after performance wise, i.e. do you want fast acceleration, are you out for all out top end power, how much reliability are you willing to lose, etc etc etc. Then, as Neil says, you need to know what you got now and then its research research research. You also need to bear in mind that performance is a package deal in so far as the parts you go with need to work with each other.

Do the EFI bikes have any kind of restricters in the intake like the carb models? just wondering.. cheep mod to remove them if it dose...
Also if $$$ is always a concern then repair $$$ is a concern right... so if you are still under warranty you might want to wait till it expires before you do any mods to the motor.ie port/polish, compression increase.. etc... or you may find you no longer have that warranty.. :zz2cents:

Maybe this will help you find out what you have, but I believe you can contact S&S give them the # off your engine and they can answer pretty much any Q you may have about what is in the bike. As far as roller rocker, .640 cam springs, roller lifter.....

Maybe this will give you a place to start.

Am I wrong here?

The .600 cam shouldn't be to bad. I did one one my 07 Chopper and Tampa BDM and it was $345.00 installed. Cam cost was $175.00. Hope this helps you.

RVRLVR,
I sure hope I don't come off the wrong way and I don't mean to be insulting but....

How many miles do you have on the bike, aren't you concerned about proper break-in of the motor?

If that's not a concern, how about voiding your warranty? (cam work, etc.)

Not sure about your experience level with Big Dogs but I would be 'getting acquainted' with your new Dog and sticking to some cosmetic mods perhaps while getting more involved with routine maintenance requirements, fluid type and levels and stuff like that.

Sure, it's not as much fun but in the long run, it will prolly be more advantageous and cost effective and you'll learn quite a bit more.

Too many times on here I've seen new guys getting caught up with some serious mods and then wonder why their bike doesn't run right or why the dealership will no longer cover this or that under warranty....they never took the time to 'learn' their bike BEFORE tearing into it.

Seeing more and more of that here lately...

I hear ya and appreciate it. No I don't take it badly. I have had it 1 year have about 4k on it. Took the time to break it in right. I have been riding bikes since I was 5, never been without one since. My first street experience was at 15, 23yrs ago, so I do have tons of riding experience. I have had, and still do, many Harley's along with a wide assortment of jap bikes. My dog is my first, but not my first BIG V-Twin.
That being said I want more grunt. Top end is fine. It is a slug out of the hole. It feels very restricted. We don't have to smog motorcycles in cali, so sky's the limit, but I would like to be able to ride it a couple hundred miles in 90* weather. Any longer distances I would ride my street glide, I am getting old.

Cost? Thats a toss up. I'm not rich but spending $500 or $1000 really isn't a big deal to me. In the end if it puts a smile on my face then it is $ well spent:up:

Warranty? only one year left and if I haven't broke it yet it ain't gonna break within a year. My luck has always been I blow things up the day the warranty expires:angry:

How do you pick a good place to take it? I always hear horror stories about shops that mickey mouse stuff and take your money. Is the BDM dealer a good place?

pull the heads and jugs and send them to Sachs.

he can set the spring pressure and valve guide clearance to match the cam.

plus some port work and shave for compression to match.

also cut the jugs close to zero deck (after you measure)

if the cam is high lift you might need your tappet blocks cleared also.

can even pull the OEM cam and send that so he can swap the gear for factory lash.

order the RB racing LSR 2 into 1 pipe

buy the SSW+ manual fron S&S and with some guidance install all yourself

this will make it GET UP AND GO!

Everything Marv said is dead on......
You won't find this good of advice too often......
John Sachs did my heads and set up the spring pressure and valve guide clearance and a couple of other goodies in my heads. Put in some 2.02/1.615 valves and good guides. My exhaust is a LSR 2-1 pipe. Sounds great and performs awesome....
I am running a Thundermax wide band EFI system that is user friendly.
Yea I got the manual from S&S as well and put the motor together myself as well as changing out the bearings for some good quality ones and powder coating the rims and other items....
If Raywood brings a video Camera to the open house he can take home a video of a pro street Bulldog smoking the tire and pulling a wheel stand at the factory.......
As Marv said,
"this will make it GET UP AND GO!"
