E carburator VS G carburator

Energy One
My 05 Chopper has the S&S E carburetor Which came Stock. My only upgrades so far are pipes and air cleaner and rejeted carb. I was considering my next performance upgrade and read alot of the carburetor posts. I was thinking about doing an exchange with triple X and upgrade to The g carb with there typical modifications and matching manifold. ( I must say the bike runs pretty darn good with the current set up, however I have not dyno'd it ) I wrote to S&S and asked them about this G vs E and about triple X modifications. Below is a copy of the correspondence. I wonder what our members think . Any comments?

The G carb will give you more power on the top end but will take some from the bottom. I think the set up you have is pretty good, you may want to upgrade to a 585 camshaft. The reason the later model Big Dogs use the G carb was to get them certified for emissions in several states. I am not sure about the Triple X company but I do not think it is needed.

Thanks,

S&S

I have a 2005 big dog chopper with 1700 miles. The enjgine is a stock 117 ci except for the arlen ness 90 degree air cleaner and aftermarket mean mother pipes. My question is; Am I missing out on easy potential horse power with what I have? maybe I should upgrade to the G. I believe the newer 117 model have the G. Why? PS. What do you think of the triple xxx company and there reworking of your carbs? Maybe I should consider this. . thx mark

Dead,
IMO,you prolly have restrictor plates as well with the "E"carb.I would ABSOLUTLY go with a "G" carb and manifold. If you are planning on doing any engine work,ie. heads and cam,it may pay to wait untill then,as you can get the right size manifold from the start. If you're not going to do any other motor work, you can get the wider "G" manifold with the carb kit(you must specify). You'll find a large improvement with the "G" carb. The only, and BEST mods you should do to a "G" carb,is a T-jet and bore !!!!!!!!!! NO MORE,NO LESS !!!!!!!!!!!
I'll guarantee it !!!!!!!!!!

How can you tell if it has had the bore job. I have the t-jet but couldn't tell you if it had the bore? Tell tail signs?

Step up to the Mike! Hey, just mic the barrel on the inside or what? I guess my question is where to mic it at? I wish we could ride together sometime LDO. That would be some good times I think. Does your bride ride with you alot?

no,
she don't ride. Used to have her own but that changed too. I still have hope she'll get on her own bike again.

Why can't we get together Mike? I agree, good times for sure!
You going to Leesburg? How about Thunder Beach?

I believe you would mic it at the opening. Stock is 44 mine was bored to 47 and change...:D

Get a snap gauge, put it in the carb throat at its narrowest area, snap, lock, pull it out ,and then mic the gauge.(narrowest area will be in the area before the emulsion tube/acc.pump discharge).:2thumbs:

john sachs ;
thx for the input. Another question. You said I may have restricter plates. How would I be able to tell?

Also ----- according to triple x, they reminded me that the E and G carb require a different manifold for my applilcation. You mentioned something about a wider manifold for the G carb as an option. Is there more than one manifold for me to pick from when I install a G on my S&S 117 motor?

thx again

You may not be able to see the restrictors untill you remove the carb(by using a dentist mirror in the manifold)or removing the intake manifold.

The 117" smog motor had taller cylinders, thus a wider manifold is used.:( That's why I said "if you're going to do any blueprint motor work it may pay to wait untill the heads/cyl.are done".Then you can use a standard "G" manifold width.I've narrowed many 117" manifolds, after the fact, when I get in house builds. It's kinda PIA.:(

the restrictor plates are intsalled between the intake manifold and the cylinder head. You will see them when you pull off the intake manifold if you have them. I had the restrictors on my 05 chopper with the E carb.

This all good stuff !

117bigdog; do you still have this same set up on yours or did you change it? tell me about what you changed (if any) and how it performed.

thx much;

This link has good info on carbs, xXx, restrictor plates and dyno's.
Me, I have a bored out E carb done by Triple X and it provides all I need.

Smaller bore size = faster velocity = better lower end
Larger bore = volume = top end

like 117bigdog said

first pic shows restrictor on intake port

second pic shows the smaller restrictor bore compared to the intake manifold

If you go with the G carb you can buy the kit from Big Dog or Nelson (wicked Bastard a supporting member of this site) The kit will have the G carb, and correct manifold.

If you buy the parts seperatly the G intake is the stock 124" intake (taller cylinders on the 124)

The E as Ray mentioned will give you the low end torque.

You gotta also decide where you're gonna be ridin 2500 rpms or 4000 rpms

Okay start throwing rocks:D

I changed allot with my engine. I started with removing the baffles in the stock exhaust, then removed the restrictor plates, installed the K&N and jetted the carb. It ran great. Some people would say thats enough but I love speed. Then I got beat a few times so I had Thunder cycle install the .640 cam. hehehehe After that my clutch wouldn't hold the power so I installed the bandit clutch. Then had the carb ported and a t-jet installed and an aftermarket ignition. From there I had the valve guide problem and sent the heads to John Sach and he cut the heads down to give more compression installed bigger valves and did a port job. And last I put on the rb racing 124 challenge pipe on. The bitch rips now. When the tire is a little cold it will spin it in 1st, 2nd, and a little in 3rd. I had it dyno'd and it was around 120 hp. I had john sach ride the bike and he said it feels like it has some more in it that the carb seems like it needs more tuning. Its a blast now. Every step of the way I picked up more and more power. ( except the clutch obviously)

I would say it depends on what type of riding you would like to do. If you want to ride with Baby Ray on his new Whizzer, stick with the "E" carb.

If you want to buy a new rear tire and a new clutch, go with a "G" carb....
