Does this look like snakeskin

Okay, so I was cleaning the garage and discovered two old fiberglass motorcycle gas tanks. Well, had to do something, so I decided to paint each half of the tank something different. One side is conventional old school flames. The other I decided had to be something I have never done, which is snakeskin.

So, I took a piece of metal, painted it black, then layed out three sections. I figured this would be my practice before spraying on the tank. So, I played around with colors and design and this is how my practice panel turned out.

Then I picked the design I thought would look best on the tank and sprayed that. This is the result. I may add some more design or graphics to it, not sure yet. So, if you saw this on a tank, would it seem to be snakeskin?

I first tried using a fish net (actual fish net) but didn't like it. I then took a laundry bag (which is what I used on the tank) and I like that look better.

HEADS UP!

Older fiberglass tanks will fail when used with ethanol cut gasoline. I get frequent warnings from my boating network ( mags, insurer, etc) about fiberglass tanks in boats leaking due to the ethanol destabilizing the fiberglass matrix. Have some horrific pics of boats that went boom. Root cause failure analysis found fiberglass tank and ethanol cut fuel were the culprit

At first I wasn't sure about it until I saw the tank actually painted. It definitly looks like snake skin. Cool idea.

No talent for painting but fun to wear!

That's how I do it! Try taking the end cap off your airbrush and stipple (lots of little dots) of browns and tans. This makes the overall effect more realistic and textured. And highlites & shadows to each and every scale if you're feelin a little OCD!!!! Good job!
