Paint warranty?

Hey all, thought I'd let you know the tank came back and looks great! :D They sent another gas cap though. This one is a "clicker" cap, and the old one wasn't. Anyone know if it will make a difference?
Gotta head to the garage soon and install. :whoop:

I changed over to the newer version ratcheting gas cap after dropping my original non-ratcheting one and f-ing it up beyond repair.....it is much better in my opinion as it seals just fine and you cannot inadvertently over tighten it.

Glad your paint turned out good. Never seen the ratching gas caps. May need to look into getting one. The one I've got is hard to unscrew. Getting worse every tank fill.

Paint peeling? What the hell? I've had a lot of cars, trucks, motorcycles, ATV's over the years and I've never had a problem with paint peeling!!!!!
Most of the vehicles I've owned didn't cost $30K plus new. I applaud Big Dog for working to solve problems after the fact. My point is get it right the first time!!! There's no excuse for a bad paint job other than it was either neglect in the materials used or the preparation/application of the paint. Solve the problem in the factory Big Dog so we don't have to keep bitching about it here on the forum. I wish we had nothing but positive comments about our Dogs. Sadly, I can't say much more about my new 2008 K-9 EFI other than the fact it look so good on the showroom floor!!!

BDM replaced my tank a while back due to the liner releasing from the wall and it also came with the new type gas cap. It works fine but seems made much cheaper than my original one. It almost seems like it is plastic and my old one was a billet piece. The new one works fine though...

Look for me on the road.
Whoever has had paint work at BDM, how long did it take to get it back? It is almost 5 weeks, they told me 4-6. It seems like an eternity cause it is getting warmer every day. They have always done me right at that dealer though. I just need some 2 wheel therapy.

Mutt,
I was wondering where did you have the problem with your paint? I also have an 08' Mutt with some peeling on my fender under the strut area.

Sorry I just read your original post and it seems like it is in the same spot as mine. How did you get started getting this taken care of?

I brought it to the dealer and made sure they had pics on file before my six months was up. Big Dog let me finish my riding season. I brought the fender in and dropped it off. BDM said as long as the manager said it was submitted within the 6 month period it was okay. Hearing your problem makes me wonder if it is just us 2.

Hey guys, thought I'd jump in again.
The 1st time my tank got sent back, it took about 5-6 weeks to get returned. The one that came back(it was a different tank, I think) looked great on the outside, but when I went to put it on it had some green sealer/bondo-looking stuff loose inside. The piece of stuff was a few inches long, 2-3 inches wide, and at least 1/2 inch thick or more. There was also some more of that stuff still stuck to the inside-bottom of the tank.
I called the service shop, 2 hrs away from me, and ended up taking it back to him to send off.
It's now been 3 more weeks, and the weather here has been un-seasonably sunny.
As a side note, I wonder if the amount of this bondo-like stuff has very much of an effect on the amount of gas you can put in a tank? It seems like the miles per tank can vary quite a bit from bike to bike. I'll bet there is more than a quart's worth of room being taken up in that one tank...

I just had my tank repainted and it took 5-6weeks, BDM did a great job. My bike is 1-1/2 yrs old and it was taken care of no charge. I think it is a different tank because the gap from the seat to the back of the tank is different. I did check and the back stop is tight against the tank. The tank also had the cap that clicks and they did put tank liner in it. Cudos to BDM.
As far as the paint not holding up----shit happens

Gas tank update....Got the tank back again. Same tank as they sent the 1st time, no bondo in the inside, sealer looks good.
Put it on today, filled with gas, checked the petcock, and took off for a short ride.
After 2 1/2 months without her, it's damn fine to be in the wind again!!!

Just curious - look under your tank and at the mount - there should be two bolts and an empty hole - where is that "empty hole" to the front or rear of the bike? If its in front then all is good and possibly a new tank. If it is in the rear it's not mounted correctly - hence the gap (and you should feel a slight wobble) - Again, Just curious let us know....TKS

Hey Ed,
You're probably right, for me ignorance may be bliss! I should say I didn't see any of that green stuff this last time. There could very well have been some out of sight...
Why the bondo to begin with? I spent many years as a pipefitter/welder in a papermill, and can't imagine having leaks.
Also the coating inside the tank looked like some sort of chemical/epoxy stuff. 20-30 years ago I coated several motorcycle tanks with some Kreem-style paint that looked more like an aluminum paint. Maybe the old-style stuff has been improved on?
Glad you're on here. If I run into paint issues in the future, I'll be more likely to give you a yell and see if you're open for business. I feel good about BDM standing behind the paint so far, but my 6 months will be up now.

Went to Daytona bike week and the new gas cap caused a vacuum lock and shut me down after about 1 hr of riding. After a little thought, it came to me that the cap was the only difference since riding last, loosened it and was on my way. BD removed the white part on the inside of the cap, they said that was what caused the vacuum. However after only filing the gas tank once since it was repainted, the paint is already lifting around the bung.:( I guess shit happened again

I don't know shit about bondo and painting, but why would there be bondo inside if its not been wrecked? During the build maybe, I'm glad i added a fuel filter which i would have not done if i didn't find this site...:2thumbs:

Paint "defects" within the first year or so are one thing. The factory should have some sort of claims adjuster who works with the dealers to readily correct factory defects.

BUT..normal wear & tear is another, and is to be expected...that's the price we pay and the gamble we take doing the thing we bought the bike for in the first place...RIDING!!! :whoop:  :2thumbs:

Now, get out there and ENJOY LIFE on your Big Dog!!!
