Hello everyone, it has been a long time since I posted anything on this forum. The way the current economy is I have been only thinking about surviving. I have been on this forum the last couple of days trying to figure out what I should do. I am currently tearing my motor apart so I can completely polish the case; cylinders and heads. So I thought now would be a good time to change the cam out and complete some other mods. I would like to get more out of the motor without getting too carried away. This is what I was thinking so far from reading other postings and I want to make sure that I am doing it right. Can not afford to redo!!

1) 650 Woods cam & springs
2) Thunderheart Ignition
3) Increase compression (don’t know the best way)
4) Bandit Clutch

I recently removed the restrictor plates and installed the XXX G carburetor. I also have VH BR pipes and an S&S single bore tuned induction system.

Looking for some input; especially if someone has already done this to a 05.

Thanks!!!!

My 2005 is close to that:

S&S 600 Cam with heavy duty springs
Thunderheart Ignition ( a must do)
Increased compression
Bandit Clutch
XXX chrome carb

My bike is now extremely quick.

Which woods 650 cam because between the 2 they have a minimum compression requirement. I run the W9F which needs a 10.8:1 comp to be happy you can get away with less on the W6HF. Cutting the cylinders is the best way to increase compression, you have about .040 to .045 to play with. What are your intensions with the heads? larger valves? Keep in mind that when you start cutting the cylinders and changing gasket thickness that piston to valve clearance must be checked. I can't tell you about the thunderheart ignitions but I run a crane hi-4 with no problems. Here's a little list of what I had to do.

Well I picked up my bike yesterday and it's a huge improvement from the original state. Pretty much the neck snapper I was looking for. I'll post the changes that took place but I need to get 500 miles on it to really let it rip and give you a seat of the pants report. The ignition, pipes, and carb were previously done so I'll just give you the basic motor work.
Cylinders were shortened by .045 (which means -.045 from where they were so actual finish length may differ)
Positive deck by .003 (piston above cylinder)
.010 base gaskets and .030 head gaskets.
Woods 9F cam installed with new bearing (.650 lift .256 duration)
Travel limiters installed due to fast ramp of cam
Tappet blocks clearanced as well.
Cylinders re honed with new rings
Manley .650 high lift springs with custom lower spring collars.
spring seats machined/complete valve job
heads cc'd (90.8)
some combustion chamber modifications/other headwork
intake manifold machined .035 off per side due to cylinder length reduction
static compression set at 10.8:1
aggressive timing curve set with crane HI-4 28 deg. BTDC and rear cyl. @0
rejetted carb (set a little fat for break in) 82 main 33 int.

Alhall88, if I went with the W6HF could I get away with only machining off the bottom of the cylinders and not doing anything with the heads or the valves? Would that create enough compression for the W6HF?

Yes you could but if it were me I would at least freshen up the valves and seats being how you will have them apart to change out your springs. You might want to contact our forum member and engine builder john sachs and maybe get a ballpark price from him on reconditioning your heads and change springs. It might be worth it and be less aggravation. Just let him know your plans with the cam and that you plan on cutting the cylinders. One note on the cylinders, its a nicer job to cut the cylinders from the bottom but you will find its much cheaper to mill the tops but sometimes you will run into the fins slightly.

i have an 05 with basically the same mods as AL.

i'd say get your deck height then send heads and jugs to a known porter. they'd set your springs, squish and compression to the cam your gonna use. plus tell you what the valves and guides need. and cut the jugs.

can also send them your oem cam so they can install that gear onto your new cam so the gear lash will still be factory spec'd.

good bang for the buck if you do the install yourself.

KK,
IMO,I would go with the S&S 600 cam. It's a decent cam, that when set up with the other properly bluprinted 117" parts, will give good all around performance, and reliability with NO PMS.Heads should be reworked with OS valves, and springs that will accomodate the cam.Deck height can be adjusted at the same time.:)
There are other combos if your looking to win dyno shootouts.
More info.....PM me.

Do you think I need to freshen up the vavles & seats with the motor only having 3500 miles on it.
What you may be missing is your particular model (all 05's) came out with smaller than stock valves. So the recommendation it to go back to normal size or OS depending on what you want out of it.

keep us posted on this kk

I've done some of this stuff to my 05

Decked the jugs
W6HF cam and springs
Valves - 2.000" and 1.605" (like you would have if motor came direct from S&S)
S&S rocker boxes - you might want to consider this. See what John thinks
S&S travel limiters
S&S IST ignition
PSI carb
Bandit clutch
Minor polish on the ports. Just a bit of tidying up really.
You will also need to check if you have one of the recalled VR's, chances are you do - I put a compufire on mine. I think Marv is running a HD VR.
Good luck :2thumbs:

Any S&S motors with TP rocker boxes = flirting with MAJOR cylinder head problems !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Geometry is NOT correct.
John
How is that PSI carb, and what generation is it ?

both Lee and I have the gen 4

it has a long pull but you just need to grab more when you want it all.

need to check the float cause when parked in the garage i can smell fuel. just been shutting off the petcock before turning off the bike to keep from washing the jugs.

i've had the G bored and tubed from XXX. also had a weber 45 dohc, then the PSI which really complimented my motor mods. really opened it up.

John, what do you think of swapping the 640 out for the 9F?

got the 9F on the cheap so i was gonna throw it in for kicks.

John,

Where are you located and do you do any of this machine work?

Thanks
Tom

yeah I like the carb and particularly like how quick it is to adjust without having to change jets. I got a problem with my bike at the moment though and it might be the carb. I'm also seriously thinking about getting the LM-1 unit. I think Al has this and I like the look of it.

just an extra comment on the PSI carb...

Picked my bike up today and Andy had taken the carb completely apart to clean everything up (it had some shit in it) and he said it is a fantastic piece of engineering. He thought it was very well thought out, designed, and machined. :2thumbs:

tcalz06 john did my heads and some other mods to my bike. He does awsome work. He is a no bullshit person with great prices and quick turnaround. You can also buy parts and accessories from him too.

I agree with 117, John is a no BS person, and really knows how to make a V-twin come to life without sacrificing rideability(?) and dependabilty.
