I stumbled across these videos and thought I'd share them. When I owned my shop up in Michigan I actually had a a guy come in to our shop that made his own oil additives and he had one of these bearing test machines. I run the Royal Purple XPR oil in my Dog and my friend has been using Royal Purple for many years. I run the Purple Ice Engine Coolant additive in my V8 S-10 and seems to make about 15-20 degree difference. That means alot in FLA on a 95 degree day at a stop light!!

I remember about 10 years ago or so my father tore down a race engine that had been run for a season at a local track and he called me over to show me how the entire inside of the engine was died a purple color from running the oil for some time.

I just recently changed all of my fluids and went back with Royal Purple 20-50 in all three cases. I thought about using other brands, but decided to stay with Royal Purple due to the availability of it around here.

So back on the "which oil is better" kick huh. Run what you like, change it every 2500 miles and ride. I put over 60K miles on an old 80"evo and ran good old dino in it. That's all I have to say about that.

What about Amsoil syn I hear that was pretty good as well , any idea.
You won't find a better Grp IV oil than Amsoil. There are other oils that are probably just as good, Castrol has a new syn coming out that is supposedly very good.

I stopped using RP after I had a turbo failure on my twin turbo GTO. Not 100% sure it was the RP that did it, but I it seized up.

FYI,Your rings WILL seat within 50 miles or less.
John

OH , I have to differ on that!!!

Took my bike in at 2500 miles because the valve guides had been leaking and went south. When they tore the engine down, the hatch marks were still in the cylinders from when it was built. Service Tech said that the guides had started leaking before the rings had seated and then they never did.

Big Dog ended up putting a complete top end on the engine because of it.
Dealer said to never run synthetic oil until AFTER 2500 miles of break in.

I am a big turbo guy, did turbo upgrades and hop ups for over 9 years out of my speed shop up north. In your case, seen it many times, was more than likely lack of oil getting to the turbo and causing failure. Nothing to do with any brand of oil.

Tell your tech to call Hastings so he can get an education on piston rings.

Thats right... one thing for sure ..start talking about oil and everyone has a story or opinion ! If your old enough you will remember stuff like Skick 50 and others ...Graphite .....yup and if you remember thats powered carbon ..Millions of people used this in there engines ... Not me ...but that Zmax stuff that Carol Shelby pushes really intrigues me ...Does anyone use or
think this stuff works ?? John I would like to hear what you think?

So, your saying that if a cylinder is washed with oil from the top side that it won't stop the rings from seating?

Then why after over 2000 miles of leaking valve guides did the rings not seat?

That's NOT what I said....We were talking about rings seating normally(With NO extenuating problems)
In all probability, your rings seated. Then you had a seal/guide problem that put a lot of oil in your cylinders,(heat and major amount of oil)causing them to glaze. That will cause oil to pass by the rings.
Most likely the cylinders just needed to be deglazed with a ball hone, your head issues fixed, and you would have been good to go.
Then what do I know,I've only been doing this "stuff" for 40 + years.

IMO,with the additives they put in todays synthetic or diesel oil blends,I wouldn't add anything."Ain't no magic".
Regular cheapo dino oils,I just recommend them for 50 - 100 mi.break in.

It had plenty of oil, the new turbo has lasted 2 years. It was either a defective turbo bearing or crappy oil. I chose to eliminate both possibilities, but the more I think about it I'm leaning toward defective turbo.
