Well, this has been a big battle for many folks. And BDM has came out with yet ANOTHER repair for this.

They are ditching the bolts on the top as well as the old ones that use to be on the bottom on the older dogs.

The tops are going to these push in pins

Then instead of threaded gramets in your side covers they do these gramets

I guess time will tell if they work out...

This is a great set up and does a good job of holding the covers in place without causing them to crack! I know several people who had this update performed and haven't had any further problems.

My 2008 K-9 EFI was in the shop in early December '08 for an electrical problem and the tech discovered one of the side covers was cracked. BDM has provided new painted covers with the new push pin fix. Wonder why BDM didn't make this change back several years ago when they starting seeing cracked covers caused by vibration at the attachment screws?????????????? At least my bike is still under warranty and BDM is covering this repair. I'm thankful for that.

I have an 05' chopper that has the new pins and I just took in my left cover for the 2 inch crack. it cracked in the bend at the top leading edge and a crack to the lower bolt hole from the edge.

If you have a crack in anything from plastic, wood, or even concrete. Drill a hole at the end of the crack. This will keep the crack from expanding longer. Then for further advice... put some silicone or other sealant on it.

sending mine out today...

I took my side covers off when I got home from work....I am sending them to Michelle at Full Throttle....she said BDM will replace them with the graphics on it:2thumbs: when my bike was at the dealer last summer....they did the recall on the covers with the grommet and pin hook ups...but the Tech said I already had a crack in them....so I rode the whole summer like that....and now with the scoot up for the winter... I might as well get these sent out so I can have them back by spring! here are a few pics....

Well it's obvious to me that the side covers need to be "beefed up" at the connector points if the covers are still cracking with the latest flexible grommet fix. I saw an earlier thread that a forum member had added fiberglass mesh and epoxy himself to beef up the weak points. Hopefully one day Big Dog will understand this simple principle and have the side covers molded thicker and avoid "bandaid" fixes like we've seen.

actually....when the dealer did the grommet fix last summer....my side cover was already cracked....the Tech told me about it and said to send my covers back to BDM in the winter to get replaced so I wouldn't have to ride the rest of the summer without covers...so they did the grommet fix and I rode the rest of the summer with the cracked tab........but I agree....they still should be beefed up at the tab area

hey can anyone give me any pointers on how the hell you get the grommets into the side covers, BDM sent my covers back to me and didnt send anything with them to attach them. Call them and they promptly sent me the kit but I am having a hell of a time getting the grommet through the cover. Dont want to tear one or scratch my cover

Thanks

Try some hair spray or rubbing alcohol, that's how I put rubber grips on my race bikes...it dries quick but makes the rubber slick for a minute

If you are talking about the orange gromets in the battery covers, I just put in new ones, you just have to start one end and turn as you work it in, I also used a little vasoline.
