Starter Bolt rust

I am getting ready to put the transmission back in and I look at the rubber that has deteriorate on the starter cable. I tell myself, I need to put some shrink wrap on that so I pull the boot and bam.....Crap has rusted up. I pulled the nut off and used a soft wire brush to clean this up and I will get a new nut for it. Think I ought to put some dielectric grease on it or something else when I put the boot back on?
Always something...

You may want to coat it with some of the battery terminal goop. Also while you are in there you may as well pull the cover to your solenoid and clean up the contacts as BBChopper did with his. He has a "How To" on it.

As for the cable wrap, that's pretty common and each of mine have done it. After you clean it up just throw some more shrink wrap on it.

Thanks Ray on the link....I will do that too.
Too late for the shrink wrap. I took my dikes and cut the old rubber off along with the boot . If I had left the boot in the starter I would just put some shrink wrap on it. Now I have to order the boot and sleeve...I guess the beer, pain killers and two days solid in the garage took it's toll..:whoop:
I am getting some work done though...

my wire looks the same way, no rust on nut, i took off the nut & installed heat shrink 2 layers over factory rubber, reinstalled boot & nut, i've only had bike 6 months, could take it to dealer but its an easy fix, must be a problem with them

Ray, I pulled the cover and did the contacts. Nothingdark or burn, just some pitting but sanded them out just the same.
I will order another boot cause I cut the other one up...

I would consider replacing the cable or at least the cable end, use some dielectric Tune-up Grease (Permatex) item # 22058. That is what I have always used on all my rides.

I guess the rubber on the wire is crap. I've seen this on AIH and Swifts. Also got a starter on a 100 HP Cummins diesel did the same thing. Heat shrink is my friend:bang:

If you can change the cable. If not... consider maybe using the liqued electrical tape.
