Tranny Problems

I left the house and headed to the gas station about a mile down the road and this high pitched squeeling noise started so I pull over and shut it off, put it in neutral and it will not roll backwards, it starts to but then like hitting a wall it just locks up. I mess around with it for a few minutes and it just seems to start rolling for whatever reason so out of curiousity and laziness of not wanting to walk back to the house and after it idled for a minute or so with no noise I put it in gear and it goes about 2 feet and locks up in foward. I decided to shut it off and try to go through the gears to see if anything felt funny and everything felt normal, one last ditch effort I fire it up and everything seemed just fine, I'm baffled with the way it was just locking up but on a positive note at least it happened now and not in May, lol. I took it in to the shop so we will see what they say, it has 4,962 miles and this is my only boo boo so I can't complain but I was hoping to miss out on the tranny problems. Anyone else had these symptoms

You've smoked the needle bearings in the main drive gear! I experienced the exact same problem on one of their 08 ridgebacks (it required the replacement of the tranny)

Thats allright MadDog but I dont like the sound of what happened, if it is the Needle bearings as you say that will suck, Warranty runs out soon so it was just a good thing it happened now I guess, rear rocker cover had recently started leaking pretty good too so no time like the present to get it fixed.

DV, is this due to the belt being to tight as you posted in a different topic?

I hope not because the shop did the last service but I could see where that could cause a serious problem.

I hear ya Mike, but is the drama and BS worth the tech stuff? I mean we somehow managed to get by without it before....:job:

I'm just sayin....

Ok guys, dont hijack my thread with this BS, just joking. On a serious note anyone got any ideas on the way this tranny was acting, I've searched and havnt come up with these symptoms.

Open it up and look in there! It's tough to diagnose tranny problems, esp when they are intermittent. Open the top, get a flashlight, and look down in there (drain it first, look for metal in the fluid). A piece of something could have broken off, or a needle bearing, and jammed something up temporarily. If that's the case, you'll see metal in the fluid. It's very easy to get the top off, and the side trap door to check the throwout bearing, then take off the shift drum and look for damaged gears or forks. I know it's under warranty, but I'll bet money that if they take it in the shop, and it's not doing anything funny, they won't take the time to really check it properly.

I thought dogvet had nailed it for you. Did you take it to the dealer to get it taken care of yet? You said you had coverage still. Take it in and get it fixed. For free.

Dogvet did give his idea and he is probably right, just curious if anyone else had these symptoms. It's in the shop now under warranty and we will find out soon enough I guess, I was kind of thinking along the lines of Moespeeds theory that they may not go in and really look for it since it's working now, I'll keep you guys posted on the outcome, BDM has done a really good job on getting these problems taken care of so I'll keep the faith in my company.

Ok, just updating the info, they called and said they think something was stuck in the belt thus causing it to lock up, not saying anything other than I can't explain the noise I heard from the primiary area if this is true. My biggest concern is that my warranty runs out on the 16th of the month and its mid winter, no riding time to check it all out. Hopefully they will still honor it later on if it does implode. I feel sure something in the tranny's smoked but it's not my decision to tear into it.

I was in Iron Lightning yesterday. I asked if they'd worked on your tranny yet. They said they thought it was something in the primary. Call Mike at Thundercycle and ask him if he thinks this is possible or if you should have the tranny cracked open. They do a really good job on mine. It may be worth a "second opinion".

RIDE IT HARD!!!
If they are made aware of a problem before warranty runs out, even if it's the last day, they must honer the warranty even if it runs out. I know this because I work the warranty stuff at an H-D stealership.

1mndg, I'm aware of how HD does it as like you I went to the cheese head state and sat through that boring class to get certified to do warranty claims for HD. I was the service manager at a HD dealership down in Tx., I did get drunk many times on HD's dime, in Arizona,Wis. and Florida, anyway I have faith that it will work out now or later. I'm just baffled with all the tranny problems these bikes have,
