replaced my speedo

I recently replaced my speedo when the bike had 1433 miles. Of course the new one registers 0 miles. I noticed a data wire near the battery. If the dealer hooks up to this, will it show the true miles?? If I go to sell it later I want to be able to prove the true miles. Thanks

I generally only use the odometer function to identify fuel stops

Do you know if that's for all the years? Mine is an 03 and I am on my 3rd speedo. I try to replace them as soon as I can but I can only estimate the mileage when the prior one goes out, lol! That would be great!

Best part of the whole speedo thing.................is that a Big Dog dealer told me not to worry about it most people just take them off when they break. I originally laughed and said not me, I like to know the mileage so I can keep up on things, you know silly little things like, "SERVICE!!!!!!!!!" At this point now even I am thinking of going without it!

Why didn't the dealership have it programed to your mileage? This is a DOT requirment.

The USB connection under your seat is for the EHC and no it won't tell you about you mileage. You can download the ignition and it will give you information on the number of hours your bike has been ridden and how you have ridden it. And the number of redlines you may have done.

Welcome to the site.

I realy think this is a constant trouble spot for BDM. Mine if you let the battery get down the speedo does not go so no miles recorded . keep it on tender its ok or charges up and I stop and start the engine a few miles down the road.

Its all OK , I can deal with this but I think BDM should keep on all this and other small trouble spots

Yea, that's the problem "BDM SHOULD!" This is a problem that should have been rectified by them. Raywood did you say this is a DOT requirement, reprogramming the miles? Well somebody should tell BD that because there's a lot of them running around that no one knows the mileage of!
In my humble opinion if they were a respectable company they would have come up with a solution to the speedo problem, obviously there is a big one, and offered replacements even if we have to pay.
You know something simple like we buy a speedo that works, take it to the dealer and they program it for us.
Oh did I say come up with a solution to a problem, them, Big Dog? Please somebody shake me I must be dreaming!!

The speedometer board or the ECH should be designed to FLASH write the processor chip memory to set the current amount of miles on the odometer display after replacement.

I feel it should be automatically done if the speedo is replaced under warranty - Interesting DOT question?

Over the last 4 yrs (first two actually) I went through 9 or 10 speedo's. Forgot now but each time my dealer had to fill out a DOT affidavid ceritfying my mileage. Just like a car dealer can not roll back the mileage on a car! In the original question of this thread I would say the dealer didn't do there job and wonder how BDM even sent them a new speedo unless they just got one from Autometer (who couldn't care less) and wire it in to the correct connections.

I like the FLASH idea. But just like most custom bike manuafacturers the speedo's are contracted out to Autometer or Dakota Digital. And both of them have had there problems.
Hopefully this new speedometer that will later be made to retrofit 05 and nerer bikes will cure all the problems. Although now we have a seperate circuit board for the idiot lights, the new speedo with have them built in. But it's still made by Autometer........

The new 2008 software update will cure this problem. You can tell if you have the latest update because if it does the speedo does two sweeps when you turn the key on.

From what I hear, the old software (one sweep) has problems initiating the speedo when the battery is low, or the speedo is trying to "power up" while cranking and sees low voltage.

The local dealer has had a couple 2008's that needed this update to fix the speedo.
