I had to replace my rubber tank bushings which was no big deal. Refilled the tank and know it wont start.......checked the gas and its flowing, any ideas......I got one puff of black smoke and that was it.........going to be 60 tomorrow and I need to get on the road..........prefer not to be pushing it!

Bike wont start - help

I changed the bushing on my tank. Did not touch any electrical stuff, hooked up the gas lines filled the tank and now it wont start? Tried until battery gave out. I got one puff of black smoke out of the pipes and that was it. Its going to be 60 tomorrow and want to be on the road. Prefer doing it riding instead of pushing any advice out there?

Is was supposed to be funny Richie. I would guess you pinched a wire installing the tank, accidetally disconnected something, or fouled your spark plugs. Good luck.

If it were me, I'd take the tank back off and check to see if I had pinched a wire during reassembly. Have you checked the spark at the plug to see if you're getting fire??? Common sense things first.!!!

Ignition

is it carb or is it FI with a fuel pump? like hippy said, could be a pinched wire.
If Soko would check to see if he had a spark at the plug, that might help to rule out a pinched wire. If it's anything like the Dawgs, there are bundled wires right in the area of the tank mounts and easily pinched.!! He may have even pulled a wire apart at a connector or something related.

How about some more info soko.

1. Are you getting fuel to the carb?
2. Are you getting spark to the plugs?
3. Check for pinched wire under the tank.
4. Get the battery on a Battery Tender.
5. Does you bike have fault lits like out Big Dogs that will tell us anything?
6. Is it flooded? Are you using the Enrichener to start it? Don't if you are!

Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Its been awhile since I pulled a AIH fuel tank, but the fellas are on the right track. Sounds electrical. Did you check feul flow at the carb or the petcock? I never liked the inline feul filters on the american ironhorses.

I responded on your other post, but to take a shot........... They had a problem with the wires on the primary side of the coil arcing on the coil cover. Shit can the inline filter if your bike has one.

I merged the two threads! No reason to be running two posts at once.

Is it getting spark?

AIH's have ignitions that they call igniters. Located on the back side of the front rear fender...

Here's a piece of a post when i replaced one...

So the ignition that we were hoping to get in from FedEx today, wasn't in... but no reason we couldn't get a jump start (no pun intended)...

Pull the rear wheel

Rear axle and spacers... always worth noting their correct position (also note the lack of dirt and sand on the lift)

Removed the rear wheel to gain access to where AIH put the ignition. Yep on the front of the rear splash gaurd. Just out of reach of getting to it from above the tranny.

$138 + S&H for this thing

But damn... look at all the dirt and sand that came out from behind the ignition... no wonder it went to shit, cause you know water took it up there!!

All ready for the new ignition and more miles
