Crane Coil

I have a 2004 BD Chopper w/ S&S 107. I am installing a Crane Hi4 ignition (p/n 8-4100). I have the ignition in and wired. I am in the process of swapping out the coil. The bike has a dyna coil now - with TWO wires going to it. One is red (power) and one is yellow (just marked "coil" on the wiring diagram). The Cran coil has three terminals marked "- + -"

My question is this - can I use this coil or do I need a different one? If I can use this coil - how do I wire it? I asume red to "+" - would I split the yellow to the two "-" terminals?

Also, I know others have used the Crane Hi4 ignition - what setting are you using??/

Thanks!

Keith

You don't need the yellow wire just cut it, but you do need a single fire coil. You cannot use your stock coil because its a dual fire. The crane schematic shows that the red wire from the ignition and the ignition switch go to the + side of the coil and black goes to the - side of the front coil and white to - side of the rear cylinder

I am glad I asked. I wired it through the EHC (yes, I am on the list for the wire-plus module). From what I can tell, I need to just wire direct to the coil and the only wire that would go through the EHC will be the one for the Tach (Brown on the Crane and Green coming from the EHC that went into the old ignition module.

The coil I have from Crane is single fire. (p/n 8-3100)

Yep you got it. I also replaced my ignition switch at the same time so you will also be needing the orange and black wires to the switch as well.

Thanks for your help.

I have a sportster switch ready to go in for the wires-plus. Did you put one of those in or a BD ignition switch?

No no more BD shit for me, I just picked up a 3 pole key switch from drag specialties that would fit in my new coil cover.

I know Orange to red and black to black on the switch, but where do you tap in the thrid wire.

Got everything installed. It runs fine, but the tach does not read right. It goes to redline at about 2000 RPMs. Makes setting the timing with a timing light next to impossible. I set it statically and it seems to be OK.

Any ideas on the tach?

Not really my tach works fine, you use the green wire that came from the ehc that was with the yellow, green, red, and black connector correct? I clipped the other wires and spliced the jst connector to the brown crane wire so it still plugged into the ehc. Also you didn't ground the green wire from the crane did you because that should only be grounded when using the timing light.

Nope that is how I did it. I will call Crane on Monday. It looks like it is reading 2X the normal RPMs. I noticed the Crane Hi4 had two pick-up vs the BD single pick-up. I wonder if that is doing something.
