NEED HELP PAINT SAVER

Has anyone ever taken their paint saver off. would love to know if it will come off in one piece, I work in aviation and I wanted to make sure it all went back together correct I even have some fuel tank sealer to reinstall it. DON'T GET ME WRONG THE FOLKS AT THE PUPPY FARM ARE GREAT AND SAY THEY WILL FIX IT AGAIN. But I would have to send it back to them, I have bought a new paint saver but do you guys think I should send it back to them or fix it myself. I had my boys in machine shop make me a tool to the new part, but I am not sure what I am getting into any help would be greatly appreciated..:flag:

There are two ways to get it off. First you can get the tool and be really carefull because they put JB weld to keep them on. I would put blue tape all over the tank to protect it while I was doing this. The second method is to take a dremal to each side and split the saver in two pieces. If you take it off, just use a different paintsaver that you can get a standard Harley gas cap on instead of being proprietary to BD. Then at least you have more options.

If you have the tool, I hold one hand on the tool holding straight down, FIRM.
Then put a cresent wrench on the tool and turn very carefully.

Cut it off from the inside... that is how the puppy farm removes them. Then take the tool and spin it, it will crush inwards

My paint saver turned into paint destroyer so,

This is what I did,

The 18" adjustable gives enough leverage to control the brake away torque.

A trimed plastic plug #18 and some tape will keep the junk out of your tank.

Exacto with rounded blades will help in removing the JB
weld

Screw in vented cap # 7200220 from J&P covers the screw up caused by the so called paint saver.

Great pic's thanks for all the info Kickstart. is that the removal tool, if so we really over engineered the one I made, (round 1 inch thick piece of aluminum with a 3/8 square hole in the center, and two steel hi-loc's that can be adjusted up or down so as not to hit the paint then some Teflon tape to keep it from scratching ) Any ways I think I am going to take the puppy farm up on there offer to fix it. I tell you I haven't ever gotten any better customer service from Harley, Honda, or Suzuki... also did you have to drill additional holes for the new cap or how did it go in??

Yes that is the $5 tool, no need to drill holes the cap is a fake and just screws in the same thread as the saver.

Kickstart does the new cap get down to the paint or is there a gap under it ? I just about ordered one from ebay today just wanted to ask first.. thanks again for the help..:flag:

There is about 1/16 clearence between the cap and paint.

BTW, I have filled the tank and put 150 PSI to the air ride and layed it over on the stand to check for leaks and found none.
