I was riding my bike to work, about 50 miles and
about 35 mile in the ride the bike just shutoff.
Tried to restart it for about 10 minutes and nothing.
Two or three minutes later it started up like nothing
was wrong. About six miles later it cut off again.
This time when trying to start the bike the caution
lights came on when I mashed the start button.
Ten minutes later I tried it and it started up again.
Got the bike almost to RRUFFs house and it cut off
again. This time it started back up about two minutes
later. I have never had this problem before. PLEASE
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

Another round please
Check your ECH connection. Sometimes it gets corroded and needs cleaning and Di-electric grease.

Sounds like your tank is not Venting!! loosen the cap, if you hear a hiss then take it off and remove the hex screw. This seems the happen frequently!

It is an electrical issue for sure, because if the flashing parking lights. If the tank wasn't venting, ignition issue, gas problem, the lights would not flash.

(1) I'd say it sounds like the Voltage Regulator is heating up, shorting, & killing the bike through the EHC.
(2) It could be a shorted cell in the battery. (mine has done that once as well)
(3) Could be loose battery terminals, or bad connection at the EHC plugs.

I would say that it is a 80-90% chance that it is one of those three things.
My bike did that same thing all three times that the voltage Regulator took a shit. One of the times the bike would not restart. The third time it would not start, only flash the parking lights, but I push started it and got it home. The VR was shot and it spiked and damaged the EHC. It averaged about 800 miles in between VR failures. Doing the same everytime.

All those BDM electrical items are gone now and no problems since.

I have a in line fuse to keep it from
shorting out the ehc. And its not
burt out.???????????
Check the voltage on your battery and then check to see if you VR is producing juice!

If your battery is dead then I would say your VR went out.

The battery is not dead and it did crank up after I
let it set for about ten minutes.
If I tried cranking it up sooner the caution
lights would start blinking when I hit the start
button.

That is a sign of a weak battery or electrical system. Check voltage to ensure it's putting out 13 to 14 volts when runnning.

Also make sure all your connections are tight. I tighten the battery lugs weekly cause they don't stay tight!

what about the caution lights
blinking when I try to start
it.
The last time my Voltage Reg went south, when I got home, and while it was still running, i took a voltage reading and the VR was only putting out 11.5 volts.

It would stay running for the most part but would not restart. They had problems with the VR's that when they heated up the buss bar inside would warp a bit and short, shutting the bike down. After the VR cooled down it would restart but only a matter of time before it was back up to temp and shutting down the bike again.

Check the VR, it is probably your culprit!!!

There have been about 20 posts on this same thing. I posted one. Same thing, freeway, quit, wait, run, quit. All have been traced back to EHC.

Ok I checked his battery and bike not running is 13.2 volts. Bike running 14.8 volts. Tag bracket mount loose and tag lights flickering. Will open it up tomorrow and check the connections at the EHC and others.

Okay this is what we found!

Pulled connectors from EHC and found some significant corrision.

Cleaned everything up and applied a liberal coat of dielectric grease and reconnected.

Jer returning from a short test ride

:)

He left about an hour ago on his 50 mile ride home, waiting to hear that he made it hopefully with no problems. :job:

Those connections should have been filled when they were put together. Something for all to check.
Hope this cures the problems.

The Dog is back on the road!
Thanks alot for the help today rrruff!!
The connector to the EHC had shit all
in it. If anyone is in georgia and needs
work done to their BD you need to go to
rrruff bike shop.(HOUSE) He is not like the other
BD dealers he is just a rider who knows
his shit about bigdogs. I believe a dealer
would have taken weeks and cost me alot
of money for things that did not need to
be replaced or repaired. (EHC or VR)
Thanks
