Another trans main shaft problem

I took the K-9 in for the 15K service and help with my mis-firing problem last week. The dealer called said they will have to replace the trans main shaft, bearings, and seals. They will know more this week after they finish tearing it down. It was unexpected as there were no shifting or other problems I had noticed. I think someone was keeping a list of main shaft problems so you can add one more. - Gary C

Gary........same here. Mine was already at the shop when it stuck in third gear. They sent it back to the factory and I haven't had a problem since. Good to see there taking care of you. Mine was down a month.

Sorry I missed you. I rode over with my brother in law on Thursday and we came back Saturday in the wind. I was very surprised at how well the K-9 handled the 30 mph gusting to 45 wind. Much better than the Harley that was with me. The sand took its toll on the billet, but nothing a little work with Mother's red ball won't fix.

The work is not covered by BDM so not sure if they are going to "take care of me" in the way you mean. I think my check book is going to take a big hit.
Maybe a call to BDM would help. Mine was out of warranty and BDM still covered it. They know they have some issues with some of the transmissions. Good luck

Got my Dog back yesterday from the dealer. Cost $1500.00 and took 4 weeks. BDM did not cover any cost as I have 15K+ miles on the bike. :(

K9Nut,
What does the 15k in millage have to do with it? Is the bike out of waranty already?
I thought Baker had a 5 year warranty on the transmissions even though BDM only covered the bikes for 2 years. I saw a post on here about Bakers coverage but not sure if I actually read it though.
Sorry to hear that about the cost. Did you tell BDM to fix it up front?
Glad you are cruising..........

Nomad2day I am not sure what you mean by "up front". I took the bike in to the dealer for the normal service. Normally I would have done it myself but have been having a problem with ignition cutting out and needed help finding that problem. The dealer found the main shaft bearing/seal problem. They said it would not be covered under warranty (bike 3 years old). After reading some posts here on the forum I called BDM my self. I was told they have helped some people with the problem when the bike is over 2 years when they are lower mileage. I was told a bike with 15K miles is a "ridden" bike and it was normal wear and tear. I talked to the local "bike" shop about doing the work, but they said they might not be able to get the BDM parts. At that point since the bike was in pieces I decided to have the dealer do the re-build of the trans. This is when I told them to fix it. I didn't know about the Baker warranty but I will call them next week and check.

Just to make it clear I do not necessarily feel that BDM should have taken care of the problem. I just asked them because some owners on the forum seem to have gotten help. If BDM had felt it was a common problem due to their design I am sure they would have stepped up and made it right. One thing I have learned in 55+ years of motorcycling is if you ride them they cost money and I have never had a "garage queen".

The only thing is the original miss-firing problem was not fixed so in the end I am going to have to find it myself :)

Sorry to hear K9nut,
By up front, I meant you told them to fix it either way if it was covered or not...
I do not know how Bakers waranty applies to us seeing how BDM purchased the transmissions from them in bulk I am sure. No one said anything about filling out any waranty cards on the tranny when I purchased the bike so I would guess that should be done by BDM and it should be part of the purchase when you bought the bike. Would not make sense for a OEM to downsize a existing waranty but should pass it to the consumer. I know if you buy a car and a tire goes bad, they pass the problem on to the tire manufacturer to make it right.
Just a thought. The below is from Bakers sight..

Thank you for the Baker info Neil. I told the dealer to fix it after I had called BDM and checked with a local bike shop so I did know it would not be covered. It was only $75 over the estimate so all was well. I will contact Baker this week to see if they will do anything. - Ride Safe and often.
