A few surprises upon engine teardown

I started looking at the part numbers on the engine parts I have pulled off the last couple of weeks and to my surprise my camshaft part# is 33-5073 and says 520B right on it. S&S cam specs on the site sez it's for up to 96 inch. Sounds a bit small for my 107 incher. I wonder what other surprises await me. The lifters are 33-5342 and the oil pump is 31-6061. The valve springs have red stripes. Any other numbers or features I can look at to figure out what's up here? Thanks in advance for any and all help!

your valve springs are .640 springs if you have the red stripe on them....

Thanks Dave, I thought I remembered reading that on here somewhere and they appear to be triple springs, but where the f#*k did that whimpy little, paperweight camshaft come from? Anyone got a 600 or so camshaft for sale?

I am suprised you had that small cam .....mine came stock with a .569 cam.....but I also had the red stripe .640 springs in it....so all I had to do was just put in the .600 cam.....didn't have to fuck with the springs:up:
day and night difference between the 2 cams:whoop: like that .600...pulls nice:up:
check on e-bay for a good deal on a S&S .600 cam...if thats what you want to go with...

Thanks, I Ebay for sure (same user name oddly enough :D ) I'll go take a look! I know I want at least a 600, had one in the last scoot, it was a 113.
:2thumbs: Since this was a used bike, who knows what happened. Glad I did this extreme make over after all. :)

When I ask S&S about my 2002, they said that the 520 cam was standard for that year, however, at the end of the year they ran out and put 600 in some. I pulled my cam convinced I had the 520, only to find a 600. I guess I could not tell the difference???

Just curious, why are you tearing down your motor?

I also thinj the 520 was a SMOG cam.

I went to put a 600 in mine and found out it had a 631 in it. That was a mind bender right there. Oh and the red stripe springs. HA!

As stated earlier in other threads, this all started out as a clean and polish then my add\adhd\ and ocd kicked in and I tore it all down for an all out rebuild. Split the case halves today to start polshing the motor case. This whole project has actually yielded some interesting discoveries ie: Neck bearings shot-cam too small-clutches shot and other stuff I can't remember at the moment. I am also adding tribal levers\pegs and grips-bigger cam and sending the seat out to seatmaker. So it will be pretty nice when i'm done and I am shooting for a spring completion date.

That's not a good cam for the street. Real peaky. I'd put a .600 in it for the torque.

Stinkimike, that 631 calls for compression of 11.2 or higher.

would be interesting to do a CCP test to see if it was set up at the time of build.

I'd guess around 205 psi.

Infinitro, you split the cases yourself? did you check run out first?

Hey Infinitro, keep us posted on what else you find, and how much this project ends up costing you. I plan on a similar OCD winter myself!!!

You mean to verify that the case isn't\wasn't distorted. I measured it radial (up and down) and axial (in and out) then realized that 1 of the numbers I saw scribed somewhere was real close to my radial measurement so I assumed that if I reassemble and check it again and it's close I'm alright. I could always use some guidance though if you have any words of wisdom for me. Thanks!

went ahead and had them put the 600 in it. I was aware of having to have the compression higher due to this forum. So I'm rolling the 600 with 110.2 hp and 119.6 lb's. I aint bitchn.

I was in contact today with S&S on another issue, and quized them on what was in my 08 k-9 117 cu in. They said for 08 Big Dogs 117's they used a 546 cam with single valve springs and non roller rockers. Probably won't know if that is correct unless something comes up down the road and I have to have a tear down.
