V&H 2-1 Trouble

For a few weeks I was hearing a strange sound which continued to get worse .. checking all the nuts and bolts I found the culprit ... exhaust bracket. This goes to the V&H 2-into-1 Big Radius which fit perfect and sounded great .. only 2500 miles and the bracket is gone .. even the original laster longer. That said if you have the V&H 2-1 BR check the bracket often.

Almost every bracket I've had has broke on me. Gets old but here's what I've learned and gotten from Clint at Stainless Creations and others.

First is bolt up your pipes to the bike and tighten them up. Then start engine and get head pipe hot for expansion and then turn off motor and when cool enough tighten up the nuts again as tight as you can get them ensuring they are square or lined up properly. Then adjust bracket (adding washers and whatever) till you get it set properly and tight. Now with the exception of frame/motor flex it should be seated properly.

Good luck,
Ray

A good shop can weld that up that bracket for you in a couple minutes.

I doubt scraping the pipes on right turns does it the world of good either :D

Hey slowrower.......What do you mean gone? ........ Gone, like fell-off, or gone, like broke/cracked in half? ......... I just installed this system on my bike. I used loctite on frame nuts and torched others pretty well. Plan to check from time to time, just don't want to look forward to replacing or welding mtg brackets.

Propper alignment is the key to bracket life...It can be a little tricky, if you dont have a lot of experience mounting pipes, an extra pair of hands can be helpful with this or in Gas case maybe 8 or 9 pair of hands on wrench day, But if wrench day is not an option get the wife, son, daughter or neighbor...since any unecessary lateral torque on the bracket combined with the heat and vibration could cause failure of either the pipes and/or bracket...my .02

Not sure why V&H didn't make the bracket with a rubber insert to absorb some of the vibrations (I will do it the replacement they are sending). As for alignment, yup I am very careful to seat the pipes properly to the engine first, they install the support bracket followed by a run-up to heat things up to operating temp and then re-torque. The design was flawed by the 90 degree bend which made it weak - the steel where it snapped was quite brittle. I am waiting by the door for the UPS man to show up! Now I need to find so additional hands.
