Popping from the exhaust??

Forgive me if I'm not in the right area, but I took my 06 K-9 in for the 2500 mile checkup. When I picked up the bike today, I started it, and it kept choking and dieing. And then the RPM lights were going crazy. I got the guys from the dealership to come out and he adjusted the idle, but it didnt sound as good as before I brought it in. Then when I rode off and decelerated, my exhaust would go "pop, pop, pop several times and continued to do that all the way home. It was cool at first, but got a little annoying after awhile. My bike was better before I brought it in. Is it because of the adjustments, and its suppose to sound like that when its running correctly?

Sounds like they adjusted your fuel/air mixture. You didn't have them change jets did you? If not then just make note of where the screw is and turn it out (richen) 1/8 a turn at a time and see if that corrects the popping.
Next time you take it to the dealer tell them not to touch the carb setttings and always know where the screws are set. As in mixture screw 1 1/2 turns out, pump 2 turns out.........

Later,
Ray

I second Raywood! Some places feel obligated to mess with the Carb if not warned.

Why can't those damn dealers leave shit alone? They have to tinker with everything like a bunch of fuckin babies wioth a toy. This should not be trial and erorr. Let me do this to see what it does. DUH!

I second Tim's reply. That's pretty messed up for them to come out and give you a quick fix and assume that you're good to go.

Yup - last time I took mine in for the 5K, it was running GREAT, so I told them to apply the medical phrase, "First, do no harm." Fortunately, we have a great dealer with a very experienced mechanic - but I would NEVER drive it away in the condition you describe.

Decel popping... not sure where you're at Rowdy but with the change of seasons it is to be expected. I would adjust the carb and probably need to turn down the accel pump.

Hey everyone. I took my K-9 back to the dealership today and told them that my bike was still coughing and idling slow, and that it didnt do that before they did the 2500 mile checkup a few weeks ago. Eric, the mechanic, spent a lot of time with my bike today and now it runs better than ever before. He put a bigger (I think it was a bigger one) jet in, and did some other things i dont even know about, and it runs perfectly. Coming home, I really got on the throttle, and I seriously almost fell of the bike! I feel sorry for those of you who have so-so mechanics at your dealerships and who dont give a shit. what I did was print off several of the suggestions on this thread, and I took them with me to the dealer, so I could at least refer to them, and not look like a dumb shit, and refer to things as "thingy's". You have no idea how much I learn from you guys. If you ever come to the Oklahoma City area (why you would want to, I dont know) , I'll buy you several beers . For those of you who are yankees, you could come to Oklahoma to see what a live cow looks like!!! We might even do a little "cow tipping", although I''ve never done that. LDO could show you guys how to "stump break" a cow, or goat, or sheep.

Cause one of the best bike rallies in the nation is held just east of you in Sparks.
Hidden away in the boonies and a great tittie rally. Check out my "Summer Run" video in the Gallery.
I'll come drink your beers!

I'm not sure what 'stump break' means but, if the beer is cold....:D :D

Glad you got the bike running right. I can see why you took it back to the dealership, because they jacked it up in the first place but there's no substitute for the pride in being able to properly tune your motor especially if you live somewhere where weather changes drastically affect how your bike runs.

If it was me, I would find out what jets were installed (just so you know what combo works good for your motor / future mods, etc...) and I would also figure out what settings all your screws are set to. Read the S&S guide to tuning the carb, that's a big help. Print it out and keep it in your service manual (might already be in there).

LDO.

Stump breaking an animal, is where you wear boots, put the animals back legs into your boots so they cant get away, and, well you can imagine whats next, not that I would know from personal experience. oklahoma, where men are men, and sheep are nervous!

Well, I may have spoke too soon last night about my bike. I went riding today, and it still is decel popping, badly, and is now coughing while riding. also when I accelerate, there's a hesitation, and then it will get going. I need to hold on tight because of that. I was also sitting at an intersection looking cool, with a girl next to me in her car, and I let the clutch out to go, and it coughed and died. pretty embarrasing, but more pissed at my bike not running well. I'm sure like you guys, when my bike isnt running well, I feel like shit. When I take it in the get the Big Dog Easy Clutch installed, I may have them put the other jet back in. And you are right LDO, I need to make notations about the things they are doing and keep it in my records.

When it was in for warranty work I told them Don't Wash it and don't do anything other than the recall.
