Circuit breaker...

Hello fellas. I am a new member, and have appreciated all the great information that is traded back and forth here in the site. I have a dilemma
of of my own and would really appreciate any help that might be out there. Here goes.... I was riding at 55 mph, bikr backfired and died. I coasted to
a stop..starter would give one click but would not even try to turn over. I had headlight, speedo lit, etc.. Hitched a ride, went back and hauled the the bile home (03 Mastiff). Tested battery(3 month old BDM 270cca) and it only
had 8.1v. Put it back on the battery tender (like always). After an all night
charge it now has has 12.2v but is only charging at 12.1v weather at idle or reving 2000 rpm. tested stator at plug and it had 40 AC volts output at the
plug socket on the front of the crank case ..so stator is good. Found circuit
breaked was tripped. reset breaker and at 2000 rpm range I now have the
charging system putting out over 14v as it should. Got on the bike and rode
a mile or 2 and pulled the seat to check the circuit breaker and it was tripped
again and of course now the charging system is back to 12.2v output.....my
question is-----where to look for what I assume has to be a bare wire or short??? Sorry in advance for the long post....just trying to get all the info anyone would need to try to help.

The alternator and VR circuit run to the Circuit Breaker. Before you run out and get a new VR, check the alternator and the wires to it to make sure it is it working. When the VR goes it goes there is no intermittent output from it or at least when mine went it went. How many miles do you have on this dog. It is possible for the alternator is worn out, or shorted out and giving you intermittent output causing the Circuit breaker to trip. Good Luck

little-Boo,
According to the service manual info I have, the 40 AC volts I have coming out of the plug in the front of the case is within spec and is right where it should be at 2000 rpm. I have had a voltage regulater issue on my last scoot..a shovelhead wideglide, and when it went (like yours) I had zero output thru it at any time...not intermittent. 8500 miles on the bike...just trying to get a direction to head before tearing into harnesses looking for a shorted wire. Thanks again Carlos.

Starting to sound like the voltage regulator is the place to start.
Thanks Eric!

If you're replacin the VR you might go ahead and replace the cicuit breaker at the same time. Sucks to just replace parts but the circuit breaker is fairly inexpensive:2thumbs:

I was thinking the same thing.
Thanks V

Yeah replace the CB with a MAXI 40 amp fuse before you go replacing the VR. Then if it still pops like now, then its the VR spiking.

And are you measuring the volts out of the stator AC?

Yeah, I took that reading in "AC". I will give the MAXI 40 amp fuse a try.
Thanks Gas

Stupid Question #1---How does one go about resetting this bad boy anyways? Didn't see any buttons or anything that looks like a re-setting device?

Dang, I thought that was just a tab from where the thing snaps into place. Learn something new every day I guess!
