Scratched Paint

I am looking for any ideas from the forum. I got my 2 up seat last week. I put it on and it scratches the paint on the fender. The scratches are right where the seat starts to go up and over the fender. It's about 2-3 inches behind the stock seat. Short of putting the 3M tape, is there anything else I can do. It looks like the fabric on the bottom of the seat is the culprit. Is there something that can go over the fabric on the seat and be a cushion between the seat and paint?

Bill are you sure that its the fabric and not something that between that and the fender ? (ie. dirt) Never heard of that happening before.

The tape is the best protection you can use there. I would be worried about adding anything (thickness) to the seat. But I have used a piece of felt (black) before under my saddlebags on my other bike, then bolted the seat to the fender to hold the bags in place. Ran for two years without a problem, but that was a seat that wasn't moving much.

Same thing here! I just got my new 2-up seat yesterday while having service performed at the dealer. On the way home, ANOTHER unexpected rainstorm!!!:( I'm officially re-naming my bike "The Rainmaker" - 3rd time caught in unexpected t-storm in 2 mos!

Anyway, I rode through and got home soaked but safe (thank God)! When I pulled the new seat off...voila' - scratches (etches?) where the 2 suction cups were and along the edges of where the seat touched the paint. Looks like 'road gorp & schmutz' from the rain got up under there while riding home and did its thing!:bang:

I think (hope) they can be buffed out, but what a pain in the #@&!!!

ps - dealer tried to put the BDM fender protection film on for me, but said he couldn't get it to stick and gave up!:loony: So..now I'm also investigating how to prevent this seat damage in the future! Suggestions??

Thanks for the feedback.

I wonder why the stuff they tried at the dealer yesterday wouldn't stick? Too long sitting on the shelf, maybe? I assume 3M makes the "Fender Protection Film Kit" Big Dog sells?

What experience does anyone have with Meguiar's "Swirl-X" and "Scratch-X 2.0" products?

They're both available at Wal-Mart, but after my last fiasco using Meguiar's Chrome Cleaner:eek:(my fault!:bang:), I thought I'd ask FIRST!

THANKS!

I have the two up seat as well. After everyride with it on I take the seat off and polish the fender with none other than Turtle Wax to get the suction marks and marks from the seat itself off. Yea it's a pain in the Azz but it works for me...

I do the same for the solo seat.... The solo seat leaves marks on the fender struts....

may be the same reason as this,Stamp Malfunction

The Postal Services created a stamp with a picture of President Obama on it. The Postal Service noticed that the stamp was not sticking to envelopes. This enraged the President, who demanded a full investigation. After a month of testing and $1.73 million in congressional spending, a special Presidential commission presented the following findings:

1.The stamp is in perfect order.
2.There is nothing wrong with the glue.
3.People are spitting on the wrong side.

to help with any suction cup damage ...prior to putting your seats on your fender should be free of dirt and suction cups also...what i do is wipe my fender down and even wax it makin sure its totally clean and then i take windex or alchol and wipe off the suction cups...this helps no dirt to be in between the two to create scratches...as for puttin down the 3M tape if your fender wasnt de waxed and cleaned with alchol, windex, wax and gease remover of some kind then the film wouldnt want to stick...or like they said above couldve been a beat roll

When using my 2 up seat I put on the fender a half moon piece of protective film that I bought a roll of at the autobody store and place it where the suction cups go. This film is for on the doors of cars for chip guard. As for the rest of the fender under the seat I lay down 2" Autobody quality masking tape--3M- and cover the entire area under the seat. Several layers taped together, it can be removed and used again and again. Have not had any scratches or paint damage from the seat or protective tape.
