Drive Belt Sqeeling

2005 BDM Chopper 11500 mi. Bought this scoot when it had 8400 mi on it. Have worked out all issues except this belt sqeeling on acceleration. Set tension to specs but that doesn't help much. Tried different lubes. They work for a while but make a mess. Wear on belt is normal except for slight wear on outer egde of belt.

Sounds like an alignment issue Rainer.

I had Morelands do that yesterday prior to going on a hard 185 mi ride. It was good for the first half but on the way back the sqeeling drove me nuts. Maybe that slight weird wear it has on the outside edge. It's done this from day 1. Had it gone through by two different shops. Replace belt?

If they're saying the alignment is good .. it's "possible" that it can be a belt issue. More likely that it is related to your pulley. Do you have a teflon coated pulley?

Doesn't look Teflon coated. Not really sure
Black - Teflon

All the pulleys come teflon coated now. My 2004 had to go through a "drive matrix" repair process where they check all the alignment points first to clear up the squeak ... then the last piece is the pulley because of the expense. When I put the new teflon coated version on, all problems went away.

I'm a couple hunderd bucks into this sqeek already. About how much does the pulley fix cost (having a shop do it).
No fix Rainer ... only a replacement unfortunately for the teflon solution. Can't tell you what your local shop will charge you on the service work, but will shoot you a PM on the actually pulley.

Had the same problem on my HD, squeaked like a bitch, till I blew it, put a new one on and no more squeak. It had uneven wear due to a rear bearing going out a year earlier. Just out of curiosity why not get a new belt?

Most of the time its an alignment issue.
Agreed, but if after proper alignment the squeek does not go away, it becomes tough to track it down.

I have been dealing with this all year.

I have read what ever I could find about this and how to fix.

Adjusted tension at least 10 different times from min. deflection of 5/8" to max deflection of 3/4".

I have used straight edges, belt alignment tools, checked torque on motor mounts, etc.

I finally pulled the rear wheel 2 weeks ago because the noise was so excessive I was convinced that the bearings had gone bad and that could cause the wheel to become misaligned while riding.

What I found was that the bearings did not have any catch in them, belt was in good condition but the teeth on the pulley seemed all chewed up. The tops of the teeth on the pulley are flat as well. Have not confirmed if they should be rounded but I assume they should be since the belt has round teeth.

All I know is that I put some graphite along the belt and on the pulley and can not make it squeel if I tried now.

In an earlier post Dogvet said that some of the pulleys just have not been standing up.

The shitty thing to me is that I am going to end up dropping about $650.00 on a new pulley and belt to fix a squeek.

If I wasn't so embarassed I would just spend $2 on some good earplugs and not worry abut it. But I bought a BDM so people WOULD take notice of the bike. Only now they are looking for the wrong reason.

I would try a different shop for checking your alignment situation.!! I took my Mastiff to two different shops for the same squealing issue, and the second shop fixed the problem....with a realignment.!!

Just a thought..!!!

Bigdog Bro2 and myself both have chromed rear pulleys and have had no squeek problems to date. 5500 miles on BDB2's and 2400 on mine. Sounds like a slight pulley misalignment or worn belt. Just a suggestion - Try dusting (with a fine brush) some talc powder on the entire belt inner surface, in the lobes and on the belt sides.

I might be way off the mark but I had a squeeling driving me nuts too. Didn't started squeeling right away but when it started it drove me nuts trying to locate it. 1st I thought it was the belt then I actually thought it was the front tire squeeling on the hot roadway. The squeeling was the worst when I hit bumps.......Found out it was the top motor mount loose and squeeling. Sounded just like the drive belt.
