Amount of oil...

Is there a pre-determined amount of oil that goes into a 117? I am about to (FINALLY) give my Pitbull her first service (closely following Gas' pics and instructions, I have printed ALL of the service threads out and made my own little service manual) and have been looking and reading and have not seen anywhere about exactly how much oil the crank case holds. I have no dipstick. The oil tank is hard as balls to actually see into as the illustration shows in the owners manual. The manual specifically says 20oz in the tranny and 32oz in the primary but nothing for the engine...

I've wondered that myself. I use the tired and true method. If my middle finger can feel the oil in the oil tank... GOOD FOR ME!

Mind you, I use that finger for other things too... Melanie doesn't mind me touching her oil with it either

Approx 3 qts.

Normal where you can see it at the bottom of the fill neck. 3 qts is in the proper range for most

Can-Dog, just be careful that you don't over fill it. There is a vent line that comes up inside the tank and if you fill above the vent line then you have problems.

Mine holds 3 and a half quarts. but I have a oil cooler. Three quarts is correct without a oil cooler. Thats what the tech guy told me at the dealer. Your right about not being able to see the oil level in the tank. Thought it was just me.

Being a "dry sump" system, normally the crankcase will only hold a couple of ounces of oil!
The oil tank plus filter will hold 3 quarts of oil.

But if you purge the oil lines with a scavenger or other, it will do about 4 qrts.

I know the manual says 3 quarts. I find if you just drain and don't scavenge it from the oil filter like Gasman's how to do shows, it only takes 2 1/2 quarts. Checking it on the kickstand you can see the oil and it is also almost up to the top line on the dipstick.

Thanks for ALL of the help. Especially Gas for the manuals...Im not sure how much you guys have worked on the newer bikes but you cant see shit down the filler tube on an 07...at least I cant. Its about 3 quarts. Shes all done and growling louder than ever.

Yep, the hassle of owning a custom!! :whoop: If they (BDM) just put the regular oil tank under the seat it would be easy but wouldn't be different!
Guess it's all about what you like and want. I don't mind using a light to check oil, keep one in my tool back.

All ways good to want to be sure about it though. :2thumbs:
