a bike should have about 56 miles on it before it leaves a dealer ship. they get them at about 25. there is a way for a dealer to hook up to a bike and get the true milage out of the bike . but if it was a dealer demo bike they can have up to about 500- 750 miles.

Just curious why you focused on '56' miles (ie. rather than 50 or 55 or something rounded) ?

Mine was 24 from the factory, and then 42 delivered.

56 is what i was told by the factory when i bout one and thought it was odd, obviously its a give or takw number. not an exact science. but it is the number i was told by alot of people at big dog

Have your dealer provide a printout like this, which indicates engine run time in hours, broken down by RPM range. They should provide it for free, though I have heard that some shops actually charge for it.

It is relatively easy to screw with the odometer, but not nearly so easy to fake this data. You should be able to see a correlation between the hours and the miles. If you think the bike may have been abused, it would also be interesting to see the number of "rev hits" recorded. This is the number of times the engine has exceeded about 6200 RPM.

Is it possible to acquire that SmartLink III program so that we can use it at home? When I emailed Big Dog a while ago about doing that, they said that it was proprietary and only dealers can get it.

It is, but short of printing out that and looking at EHC fault codes, there is no benifit. The thunderheart ignition timing is locked in. Not even thunderheart them selves can touch it.
