Some of you may recall that I had the clutch cage nut loosen up recently. I thought that I had that sorted out however; it seems the dog still isn't feeling well. Running it today I can tell something is just not quite right with it still. It feels as though something is hitting internally. Almost like one might feel if a solid motor mount was loose. You know, a solid feeling vibration/knock of some sort. I can feel this while stopped at a light with the clutch pulled in (1st). I can feel it through the bike.
I stopped by the dealer and tried to describe this. He suggests that I check the clutch carrier for cracks/broken. So I am in the midst of trying to do just that and could use a little assistance from the experts. I know the clutch nut is reverse thread; is the front engine sprocket nut also reverse thread? What the heck size is that sucker (running to store soon; can't believe there is a necessary socket I don't have). Assuming I get that far, do you have the torque specs on that one or hit 'em both with 100 ft lb? Whats the best practice to hold that sprocket for removal/install?
Also, after having drained primary and wiping things up; i loosened clutch hub trying to get that off and took a break to search the forum for some more info. Returned to find another puddle of fluid had leaked out from - trans? WTF? Is that sealed seperately or did that happen just happen because i've managed to slip the hub out somewhat? Worried about that seal in the back of my mind having read about that elsewhere in here.
Sorry for all the newbie questions; I have searched and read but I'm just not seeing it. I'm use to working on cars honestly. I've ordered the S&S service manual and have an email off to Nelson for BDM service manual; he's probably riding:whoop: like I should be doing.

Any other suggestions you can think of to track this down is appreciated as well. Just not sure what else to check at the moment (before I get too drunk)

Yeah its under warranty; but it's Sat night and I was just trying to check things out further so I know what I am dealing with here ya know. If I find bad parts, I was just gonna put it back together and let them deal with it. Guess I was hoping if I inspect it all and put it back together the prob would magically go away.
I didn't get the right socket else I need hammer a 32mm on there...
I might need another drink.

The way I see it, if the hub cracked/broke; I could get it fixed under warranty sure. But would they not just replace the part like for like and I'm no better off in terms of reliability. This bike just turned 5k miles today and I intend to ride the shit out of it. So if I need to get a bandit setup or some other clutch so that I can depend on this thing to take me where I wanna go, then that's exactly what I will do. Maybe I jumped the gun a little bit trying to work on this thing before I get my shit together with the proper service manuals et all. I tend to jump right into shit figuring I will learn as I go.
If I've wasted time or space on here with another thread, my apologies. Feel free to delete the thread, thanks. Ride safe.

:hi: purpledog, did you by chance go with your first thought about the loose motor mount and check to see if the top motor mount had come loose before you started tearing the primary apart. maybe you didn't need to do that. :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang: :bang:

Is it possibly a whirring sound(my best descriptioN) Thats what I had started only in first and got progressivly worse into 2nd . No trans fluid = bad bearings that was my noise prob and the nut coming loose could have destroyed the seal to the trans. Just my recent exp

from memory you need a 33mm socket for one of the nuts and a 31 for the other - only one is reverse thread. I used a large spanner wedged between the two to brace it but you can get a jims tool which looks like a small set of stairs - it not expensive and is probably a good to thing to have - I'm going to get one.

The fluid leaking out from the tranny is normal when you get the clutch hub nut off and there are pics of that on the forum - mine was pissing out so don't worry about it. Probably a good idea to drain the tranny fluid when you do this job and renew it after.

And yes - get the bandit its a very worthwhile upgrade.

Appreciate the help lee, that's what I needed.

BIG HOUSE, I think you are spot on here {i had that whirling as an early sign of trouble} low trans fluid may have been that; I'm hoping for something other than trans rebuild/replace, but I suspect its in a bad state given the sequence of events...

Well, the carrier is fine....

I did note a couple of teeth on the outer sprocket have slight damage/nick/burr though....

The carrier seal didn't appear damaged however I did observe the brown O-Ring on the output shaft has seen better days....

I buttoned it back up and took it out for another test ride. I'm still hearing/feeling some sort roughness which I think to be inline with what Big House suggests - internal trans bearing/damage from running low on fluid once the hub nut loosened up and caused fluid to transfer/leak out. I'm not sure the function of that outer sprocket just yet, but I doubt that nicked tooth is causing what I'm experiencing.

Kicking myself for not taking the time to learn about all this and taking proactive steps before I fell victim like others before. Maybe my experience will drive others to fix their rides before it happens to them. I gained the knowledge to do a clutch swap in the future.:smash:

Thanks BBChopper, I take it that's a good thing for me; but does that mean I probably shouldn't need to rush out and upgrade just yet? Isn't like I'm out racing / riding hard; I'm just looking for solid reliability is all really. Appreciate the advice from the seasoned vets here.
Dogs in the shop now for her official check up btw.
