How to tell which starter I have?

I have a 2001 Mastiff that's been giving me some issues and I'm wanting to put a slam button on the solenoid. Whenever I look them up though, I see 3 different buttons for different kw rated starters. One part number for 1.2, 1.4, and 1.8kw, another for 1.6kw, and another for 2.0kw starters. How do I tell which one I have? It's a used bike, so I can't be 100% certain it's an OEM starter.
thanks,

I've had issues starting with this bike ever since I've had it. After I go through everything it'll be fine for less than a week then start giving me issues again. Charging system checks out fine, battery will be in good condition, wiring all clean and tight, starter gone through, solenoid rebuilt, etc... The solenoids on these spyke starters don't seem to be of the best design. There's some comfort knowing I can reach down and manually fire the starter, knowing the solenoid is properly engaged.

starter problems

I have an 01 Mastiff and just started having starter problems. It spins but won't engage. I just tried pulling it but only got it about an inch out from the primary and it seems to hang up. Do I need to get into the primary and detach something else? Have to admit, I haven't done much work on bikes before.

You need to disengage the jackshaft.

Take off the primary cover and there is a screw going into the starter jackshaft. It may have a locking tab on it. You gotta take out that screw, and the starter will pull out seperate from the shaft.

RIDE IT HARD!!!
Be careful if you put a slam button on your starter. I was having starter issues on mine and did the same thing. Worked fine for a wile then one day the button / solenoid stuck in and kept spinning the starter. couldn't get it to stop until I pulled the ground wire off the battery. Ended up frying the EHC in the process. New EHC and replaced the starter and no issues.

Thanks for the advice. Will I have to remove the clutch basket to acess it? I've been looking for a place online for a new starter but no luck.

Stiffy call Spyke, that's what is in your bike as original equipment. You don't need to remove the basket. Once you take off the outer cover it will be right there. Just do as Moe suggested.
