'06 K9 Speedo issues

2006 K9. 3400 miles. All stock. Bike runs great. Speedo works and is accurate but when I romp on it hard the speedo mph needle drops straight down and quits working. All other indicators work. Tach, odometer, trip meter, all indicators work. When I shut off the bike and start it back up the speedo works fine and is accurate. I can take it out on the highway and go as fast as I want and it works fine until I romp on it hard or if I'm sitting still and rev it the speedo quits working, all other indicators work fine. I removed the tank and checked all connectors and all look fine. I removed the speedo and checked the connections and all looked good. I removed the speed sensor and it was very clean..
I'm puzzled. If I drive it "normal" it works great all day, surface streets or highway until I "get on it" than it quits working until I shut it off and start it back up, than back to normal. Any suggestions. Thanks

Welcome to Big Dog Biker from NJ
You may want to try disconnecting the EHC connectors and check for loose or partially backed out pins. Clean it up and replace the dielectric grease. Can't hurt and it's good maintenance for the heart of your bike. :chopper:

I've been thinking of sending the speedo to Powl's Inc. Speedo repair, Lancaster PA. They've been in business for 100 years and have plenty of experience working on Autometer gauges. I kinda like the stock analog gauge but will change to digital if I can't get the stock one to work. It works good if I don't run the bike hard..........but sometimes running hard and fast is quite fun :)

Should I disconnect the battery prior to disconnecting the EHC ?
Yes, always disconnect the battery when your working with the EHC. Disconnect the Neg - side first then the Pos +. When reconnecting replace the Pos + first and then the Neg -. Take a picture of your battery connections before you disconnect them just to be certain you replace them correctly. Count them also, it wouldn't be the first time someone left a wire that fell out of site off and caused a failure.

Just remember that your EHC is nearly 20 years old…
Yes, I've considered that. I've been thinking should I change it because it's old but still works or wait until I have an issue (other than the speedo, by the way the speedo works great if I don't race the bike) ? What are guys replacing the EHC with?

I wouldn’t change it because it’s old. I only mention it because it seems that when they start to fail its little things like the speedo or the headlamp or turn signals that start acting peculiar. Then bam it just goes. If you checked all your connections and everything was golden. Just seems suspicious that it only messes up when you dump on the throttle. And that it actually goes out completely. Sure hope you figure it out. Probably wouldn’t be a bad thing to get a EHC on your wishlist.

Thank you guys for your input. The other diagnostic I performed is I tested the charging system. Tested good.
13.2 volts at idle and 14.2 volts at 3000 RPM.
I'm going to call Curtis at Wild Steed Worx and talk to him. I'm in no hurry, the bike runs great, always starts and hauls ass.
It's just the speedo issue. Thanks again guys.

One of the old ones.
I bought my first 2008 K9 in 2009 or 10. I read about EHC issues so I bought one on eBay. Wrecked the K9 at over 70,000 miles. I immediately bought Trainman’s 2008 K9, and currently it’s north of 65,000 miles. So that EHC has toured at least 135,000 miles…..My current speedo blinks out and doesn’t register speed every now and then, so I turn the key off and I guess it must re-boot, because it always comes back on when I re-start….but…..I never ever leave town without that backup EHC. Mr. Murphy keeps tabs.
