I´d say the OP will have it in high resolution?
Ehhh I think we are getting there with technology these days but most of them are taken with cell phones so I wouldn't really call them calender quality photos.

For example my pic that won POTM I don't think it would look great if blown up for a calender. Now if people are okay with slightly grainy photos then we are all set. I'm not super picky but some people may be. Just saying.

I know this was an issue even when we did the calender photos specifically. There was a minimum requirement for resolution and not many were able to meet it unless they took it with a professional type camera. It's really the main reason it died out I think. Wernt able to get enough people who could meet the resolution requirements

I think its a good idea. Just can't figure out how to enter. Seems like there is a whole list of do's and don'ts.

I belong to a forum for 428CJ cars and they do this every year. They use an outfit called CafePress. They print the calendars as the order comes in so there is no guessing on how many to get. Once its set up, you are done, cafepress does the rest (prints and ships). The calendars are about $17. Hope this tip helps!

Problem is not all pics are good enough quality to be enlarged

You are correct. This idea has been brought up in the past and that was the issue.

Yes, Tim used CafePress for all the Big Dog Biker calendars.

The problems I see are, as Eric stated, the resolution of photos... AND selling a calendar after the new year starts.

When it comes to the quality of photos, and the end result of the calendar, I'm super picky. I only want the best to represent Big Dog Biker. With the calendars of the past, a consistent comment from people was they were blown away by the quality of the calendars and photos. I don't want to put out a half assed product with our name on it.

I say set the minimum standard photo resolution for submission to POTM and be done with it. Then we can have a quality calendar that does not impact your reputation.. Sounds reasonable but apparently not for the POTM. Thanks Eric for the run down.

I think that causes a problem for the contest. Tim always had those standards for the calendars but the POTM contest has always been about catching those ride moments and now a days most people don't take a camera on their rides because they have their phones.

Kathy is right here, the POTM was never intended to turn into a calendar. If people want that, we can look into it. I wouldn't change the requirements but advise members that the higher resolution photos would be better.

We are falling back into creating a calendar that no one actually buys.

Just saying it's possible to take a 4x5 image and enhance it to poster quality. Which is what the primary concern appears to be with the POTM submissions. Photoshop will do this..

Step One

Open the digital camera image you want to increase to poster size, even if its resolution is set at 72 ppi. Yes, 72..

Step Two

Go under the Image menu, under Resize, and choose Image Size. When the Image Size dialog appears, make sure Resample Image is turned on. Switch the unit of measure pop-up menus in the dialog from Inches to Percent and type in 110 in both the Width and Height fields, which will increase your image by 10%. Believe it or not, when you increase in 10% increments, for some reason it doesn't seem to soften (blur) the image. It's freaky, I know, but to believe it, you just have to try it yourself.

Step Three
To get this image up to poster size, it's going to take quite a few passes with this “increase-by-10%” technique, so make sure you've got a comfy chair before you start. But if you need to make your prints big, and keep as much clarity and definition as possible, it's worth the extra effort.

We had to increase the size by 10% about 12 times to get it up in size. You see I never need a professional grade camera to enhance a photo to increase it's quality for larger prints.

As for the selling of the calendar, I'd certainly be purchasing them regularly if available. My :2cents: cents..

What about adding the calendar price into supporting members yearly membership fee as an option at the time of each members financial support. Then at the beginning of the year send out the calendars for those members and then whoever would like to buy a calendar can also purchase one throughout the year.

Maybe even have a separate members upgrade option for calendar. Instead of saying "Calendar Participant" it could say "Calendar Member" for those aspiring to support the annual POTM calendar with an additional $25.00 donation. Also, we should be able to donate to the site after we are members not just when the membership expires. Some of us non-technical wonnabies have learned quite a bit from the site and want to have a way to "give back" for the support we have been provided. Just food for thought....

Unless the original image is high enough quality and the sensor on the camera is of high enough quality, the images will pixilate when enlarged like this. With a higher end camera, this can be done because the camera stores enough data. With low end cameras this won't work (this would include camera phones).

The calendars were always printed by Cafepress and as Tim mentioned everyone was always impressed with the quality. Cafepress prints each calendar to order and ships to each customer, so pre-orders/pre-order funding have never been necessary.
