Hi im new to the forum, my name is trevor, i work at an aftermarket harley davidson shop in ky, im working on a big dog that had a WP kit put on before me and then our former technician had worked on as well so im dealing with 2 different peoples messes, the bike was running fine then just died while riding, original issue was the power module caused the control module to go out(at least this is what WP tech told me), so i now have two new modules, when trying to start the compression release led turns red which according to WP indicates a ground, ive done an ohms test on compression releases they were fine according to S&S, ive tested the wires on the harness from point to point on the compression releases and do not indicate a ground, ive tested every wire on the harness and i am showing resistance on the horn wire, low beam. and high beam wires, im at a loss with this thing, any help would be highly appreciated

For the cost of those two replacement modules you would have been miles ahead pulling the WP and putting in an R.I.P. made by Kansas Motorcycle Works.
Have you disconnected the compression releases and gone through a start procedure to see if you still get the red led?

pull the tank and look for any shorted or wires rubbed through. Common problem on these bikes. What year is it? Also check the grounds to frame. Is it a efi or carb bike?

they actually warrantied one of the modules but not the other, and the WP kit is what the customer had and until i found you all i thought that was the only option, and yes i did disconnect them and try starting while manually releasing, still got the red led, i inspected the wires that were in the velcro pouch under the tank all appear to be fine, its a 07 k9, with clutch side hand control unplugged testing the wires on the harness side from connector to connector im getting resistance on the white wire, and yellow wire (high beam and low beam), and on the grey wire which goes to the horn, but im still confused on how these relate to the starting process...

If your still getting the fault LED with the reliefs disconnected then it sounds like the short is somewhere in the harness, which is not likely now since you state you have tested the leads, or the new control module has a problem

thats where im at,after recieving the new "warrantied" modules and installing, the control module(the one with only one light) started smoking during start up, i sent both back, they replaced control module and said the other was fine, also now while starting the positive terminal will smoke

Welcome to WP and all the other "new and improved" systems. Do your customer a favor and old school wire it. It will save a lot of money and time. Or, go buy a doc's plug and play system. As close to old school as you can get without changing the controls. Just my 2 cents...

yes the reg/rectifier was bad and i have personally replaced it, stator showed no internal breakdown, couldnt test output due to bike not running, i would love to do it old school but i cant convince this guy of it, he believes his 800 dollar WP kit is the only way to go, and i wouldnt even take the job after that if it wasnt for my boss, but i did talk to WP today after hours of testing they believe it to be my power module, its currently on its way from kansas hopefully ill get it this week and can continue on....
