My Harley just left on someone else's trailer. I sold it so I can buy a Big Dog, I want a chopper or a K9. I plan on riding from Albuquerque to NY in September. I read the board often, don't post much but I know there are many knowledgeable riders here. I am looking for some advise on year models. Any help is appreciated. Keith

Here are a few that are posted locally

2004 Big Dog DT Chopper

2007 Big Dog K-9 custom paint

This one started out Firm at 15.5 months ago, I think is has too many miles for the price.

I'd try to stick with 07 and newer; I'm partial to the K9 myself, but I imagine the Chopper handles well with the 250. That K9 above looks nice from the pics, but I think he may have it priced a bit high for the miles and age in this market (not that I want that be to be true, but it is what it is).
Anyway, your avail funds will likely dictate where they place you in the market; but 07's up should get you S&S rocker boxes, newer EHC (if you care about that) newer clutch carrier etc...
05 up will get you RSD and the other stuff mentioned above is fixable....just stuff to think about.
Good luck in your search, there are some good deals out there given the patience.

I agree with Purpledog. 07 and up, theres really good deals out there and it seems that the bigdogs values really drop on the newer models and then they level out a little in 05's and down model years. I think for a little more money you can get on a 07 and up.

That k-9 looks nice. It looks like those bikes are Crossroad Cycles in Rio Rancho (I notice the shop from the pics.) You may be able to swing by and check them out. Those guys used to service my bike a few years ago. They seemed pretty straight up and i've also heard some negative things about them.

I'm always checking craigslist for bikes here in albuquerque, and they are always priced on the high end, you may get a better deal looking in the Phoenix area.

If you pick one up, let me know and we'll ride!

I also agree with purpledog 07 or newer. Depending on your funds there are some brand new K9's still on the market as well and I wouldn't rule out a 2011K9 250 the smaller back tire will handle better and might very well last longer than the K9's with a 300 rear tire. JMHO

03 Chopper has all stock aftermarket parts. I walk into a harley shop and buy whatever I need. Parts are not proprietary. Dogs 04 and newer, they were required to use proprietary parts, and the newer the Dog the more parts are proprietary.

For me, its nice to basically buy soft tail 1989-2000 parts.

I would get a pro street style bike but that's just me. The point is you have to figure out what suits you. From many posts on this site 07 or newer has less bugs. 03 and earlier has less proprietary parts.
There are plenty of 04-06 bikes out there that didn't have problems or have already been sorted out.
I would pick what I liked and buy the best one in you budget.

K9 looks good. Also depends on how far you will go. I drove over 300 miles each way to get mine. Right bike, right paint, right price. Some places will arrange shipping and I'm sure you can find folks on here that would go check one out for you. Good luck!

I have a 2004 and I "Like it a Lot", but I am a taller ole dude at 6'5" and it fits me perfect. I have never rode a K-9, but if I was planning on a long ride cross country I would definitely ride them both before making a decision. You can ride the Ridegeback all day but you have to get off it for a few about every 120 miles , gas stop anyway, to get the feeling back in your butt. No trail riding either!!!!! You might lose your teeth or an eye or something!!!!

another before you jump in "cycletrader.com" drove 712 miles(this march) one way to get mine but the money i saved was well worth it. 09 ridgeback with 4 miles on it... set on the showroom floor along time and they were ready to deal.

Same here I'd go with the newer one. I think Show Stopper in Albuquerque has some used dogs too and in Los Lunas motorsports some new ones. If you never get one let's meet and go for a ride same for you Cavazos we should go ride some time. To all the dogs member around here we should meet some time and ride together.

Thanks for all the info. I rode an 03 Chopper to Daytona on one of my trips. I loved the stretched out feel. I did have the luggage behind me to use as a back rest. That makes a lot of difference. I do like the fact the 03 does not have the proprietary parts but I like the right side drive of the 05 and up. I am not opposed to travel and get what I want. I have a preference for a yellow bike, they seem to have a lot of flash. There was beautiful 05 in Salt Lake city but it sold. Recently I was involved in an accident that makes it difficult to pull the clutch. I will post the link to the story if your interested. Thanks again for the insight.

P.S. Anybody want to buy an 02 Ford Excursion Limited with a 7.3 Powerstroke and 115,000 miles?
