What type of Pipes on Your k9

Energy One

I'm having heat issues with my pipes on a 07 k-9. I was running the Yaffe Phantom pipes and they ran red hot, had the bike tuned by two different shops. Installed Trotta D2's still melting the battery cover. The dealer is currently checking for an intake leak. There is very little clearance between the pipe and the battery cover. I need to know if other k9's are having issues and if not what type of pipe besides the stock pipe are you running. I have about $1,800.00 in pipes and a ruined battery cover with custom paint. This is getting very expensive!!!

Holly shit man... are the pipes you are getting meant for fat tired and RSD bikes??

Both are listed for Big Dogs in there sales description. Trotta sells Big Dog and Yaffe had his RSD Phantom Pipes designed for the Big Dog! I have had other k9 owners contact me with the same problem, I just want to see how many are having problems. I have a feeling it could be a combo. of things. I think the battery cover design is poor and placed way to close to the pipe. The Phantom pipes are very thin walled seem almost cheaply made, but the Trotta pipes are much thicker and still have heat issues, just not as bad. Both are good looking pipes, but are burning my leg and ruining paint! Doc is looking into the problem, I'll keep you posted.

Big Dog did acknowledge at one time that the V&H Big Radius pipes were causing some heat issues. This was back in early 2007 - they back ordered my pipes because they were redesigning the heat shields at that time. When I asked them about it at the factory, they said they only had one incidence of it actually melting the plastic cover, but some more instances of paint discoloration. I think all those were on prostreet models, though, not K-9's.

The redesign resulted in the rear heat shield being wrapped a little farther around the pipe. At the same time, they shortened and raised the rear end of the pipes so they would not drag so easily.

Unfortunately, that probably doesn't help your situation a lot, but that's the only detail I am aware of regarding melting the covers.

My 07 K-9 with stock exhausts caused the paint to start blistering on the side covers as well. Dealer / Big Dog is replacing the covers, but my custom paint is going to have to be re-done on my nickel. Since I haven't changed anything yet, I'm pretty sure it should be considered a design flaw...

I'm changing out pipes soon, hoping some Martin Bros Curb Feelers might not do the same.

FrizzleFry,
Keep in touch let me know how they work, I had Martin Brothers on my last bike, great pipes well built, Yaffe pipe is junk next to the MB.
Thanks,
Doug

Bigdogbro2,
I tried the heat wrap on the Yaffe Phantom pipe, didn't help, even purchased the high end good tape! I never thought anyone would have problems with the Big Radius thats not good news!

Gas,
My Trotta pipes are ceramic coated on the outside, made the pipes twice as hot on the outside, try and figure that out. I know it doesn't make sence, but that is what happened!

I'm running Mean Mothers and although they definitely aren't as cool looking as some others they have a great sound and absolutely no heat issues. Are you running lean?

gooddoggie,
I had the bike tuned twice, it was running a touch lean, but nothing major. Glad to hear the mean mothers are working for you!

I have the Mean Mothers also and with exception of the first few brackets cracking-no issues. Never none with heat realted. THe Bracket has been good since last one which was thicker than the orginals.

There is nothing ultra cool with the MM but with the right tips, they work well, provide the power decently and have a classic look to them.

I have the V&H pipes two into two. Mine are the older model that drag the ground real easy. But I have over 5000 miles on my K9 and no heat problems.

Same pipes here. 1 of my brackets that are welded on the pipe cracked away from the pipe, So I got a free set. I also ordered 1 extra pipe so if it happens again, I have it and could slap it on. Cost me $100 bucks for that 1 pipe from the factory.
