What is the deal with Mastiff gas tanks?

On my way home tonight, my bike started to cut out. I reached down, hit reserve, and sped off. I hit the first gas staion I came to and only put 2.2 gallons in the tank. Doesn't my tank hold about 3.8 gallons? Is this normal?

No it is not normal. I have a 05 Mastiff and get about 3.4 or so before I start the fill up. Do not want to hit reserve for it is an unknown quantaty.

Have you check and cleaned the fuel strainer lately? It may have some debris in it that is allowing it to get a certain point and then the lower crap is blocking from being able to make draw.

If not, would recommend that you drain waht you can and then pull the valve, clean the strainer and get in the habit of doing the same everso often. I usuall get it ever other oil change, myself.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Fiber is right I have seen some of the other factory customs have this problem at the valve. Some manufacturers do not line their tanks and the filter will be packed in 500/1000 miles:iagree:

You may also want to check the fuel cap and specifically the right one. Originally some had a Emission valve in them (it would ber white and screwed into the underside in the middle). If it is there, would recommend that you remove it for they have been known to create problems some times too. Basically if you fill up, if you have a tight cap, when it draws down, this POS valve may not act right and create a vacuum lock restricting the flow.

No need for it for 99% of us.

^^

This got me 3 times before i finally decided to remove it. My bike shut down the day I got it riding home about 200 miles. What a shitty feeling having JUST bought a bike and it shutting off on the highway! AM I OUTTA GAS??? Nope just the damn gas cap.

yeah I was gonna suggest the gas cap - could you hear the pressure release when you took it off to fill up?

No, I didn't hear the pressure release. But I just removed the white plastic part from the gas cap, and I am going to drain the tank, and clean the screen.

I drained my tank, and cleaned my screen. I noticed that there is about a 2" difference on the petcock from on to reserve. So when my bike starts to die, I switch to reserve. At this point I have usually only burned 2 gallons of gas. This seems like I have to switch to reserve to soon. I should be able to burn a little over 3 gallons before needing reserve, right?
