Welding a friends custom fuel tank tonight. As many times as I do this there's still that feeling of BOOM! Fill the tanks with water but still that damn thought.

Yeah I know what you mean! I've welded a few sumps into gas tanks on my drag cars and I'm fixen to weld up a aluminum tank that I made on the English wheel. Good luck man stay safe.

i had to weld a tank once and a old guy i was working with told me to run the exhaust of a car into the tank for a while and it will be fine. i have used this trick a few times and no problem. hope this helps

Yep, I've used Argon in the past. Any inert gas will do. You can actually weld with a full tank of fuel as long as there is no O2, though I don't recomend doing that.

I empty them. Run an airline in it and get all the fumes out.
I fill it with argon. Then I cross my fingers and use a match on a stick. Then I will weld on it.

I once had to weld a valve on a natural gas main. This was like a 6" main, I was young and dumb and full of c.m, I did ask the old guy there if this is safe, guy said "o yeh, that main has been off for like a year". So I set and tack this flange that the valve bolts to...everything is ok up to this point, then I start to stick weld the flange, spatter goes down the pipe and ..............whooooooooof, blew my fuckin hood and welders cap off my head. Old guy laughing his ass off, I pick up my hood and finish welding, thats one of those things you never forget.

Best to make sure the tank is fully flushed out with water and then use inert gas to purge and vent for the weld. Safety first, do not want to be the poster child for the one time when things were still in there that could go boom.

I've done it. It works if the car isn't running rich.

Just finished Tig'in up the tank, no issues. Very little paint damage, filling the tank with water also has the added effect of a heat sink.

Little added safety I wash out the gas tanks with water and Dawn dishwashing liquid. Fill, shake, rinse, repeat. Never had a problem.
