Very Sluggish

Recently got some Martin Brothers Daisy Cutters and a D&M Spike Air Cleaner installed on my 07 Mastiff.

Now she's running very sluggish on acceleration in just about every gear, especially first....but a little on the others also...unless i really twist the throttle. Any suggestions? I know I should take her back to the dealer in Tucson (about an hour away) but was wondering if there is something I can do that will save me a trip.

What did you do with the jets. Did you change from stock air cleaner and pipes?

If you were to get the pipes from BDM they would have come with a jet kit of 31/76 combo. What do you have in yours now?

I would jet up cause you increased the air flow both in and out so you need more fuel. Normally a lean condition causes the bike to backfire. By your description of sluggishness that normally means a rich condition if your describing the condition properly! :D

I won't say anything about the D&M, there is enough on it already and as Thumper says "if you can't say anything good then don't say anything at all" :D

Happy New Year,

Ray - changed from stock pipes and air cleaner. the dealer said they had to rejet because of the new pipes...so I'm assuming they did. it does backfire some...not terrible...but is definitely very sluggish...like it's not getting enough gas or something....best i can describe it.

And as far as D&M...should have joined the forum BEFORE i ordered it and had it installed...once again...live and learn.

nothin wrong with the pipes, you will pry have to remove the baffles though for good performance. there are way to restrictive. havent had any problems with mine, and they make descent power.

as for the intake you may wont to turn it up. i've heard that flows better then pointin forward.

did you have to make a custom bracket for your pipes to clear the 300 offset???

don't think it was a custom bracket...came with the pipes from martin bros. here's the bracket:

you think i should have them relook at the jets first...then remove baffles...

Did your Martin Bros come with baffles? I have two pipes from them and neither one came with baffles.

Having a hard time figuring out your description of sluggishness. The term is normally associated with to much richness. A lean effect will give you hesitation/backfiring.

May just be a simple adjustment of the fuel/air mixture or accelerator pump.

Mark the turns out of your screws and play with it using small 1/4 turn adjustments and see what happens.

Have fun,
Ray

ok, thats the same bracket i got but didnt fit quite like that. i ended up makin a new one that also coverd the mounting taps. also i noticed that the radius' dont match on your pipes, im guessin its because of the bracket also. when i used that bracket my pipes were touchin my trans., didnt think that would be to good, lol.

we tryed cuttin my baffles down, openin them up, and then finally removing them completely. the just didnt flow near enough.

If you go from a restrictive pipe to wide open pipes it will feel gutless down low or sluggish. If your pipes have baffles then jetting is what you need to check. 31,76/78 is a good place to start. From memory you can pull off the bowl easily with a spike. I agree with ray that you may be to rich on your intermediate jet. Pulling the plugs and posting a photo would also help.

on the dyno the daisy cutters actually made less power then the stockers with the stock jetting and the baffles

Can't beat that cavracer. Looks like a 31/74 is ideal with those pipes with no baffles. I seem to remember him saying he was at a higher elevation though. They may have jetted his bike for Tuscon and if he is at a higher elevation those jets could very well be off.

thanks for all you guys help...as i said before....i'm mechanically challenged....i.e. mechanics LOVE me

i guess the term that would best describe it would be hesitation. i turn the throttle..it short of sputters, hesitates, etc then sort of kicks in and takes off. same thing when i change from one gear to the other.

yes the pipes have baffles in them. should i take them both out...neighbors will love me then....

elevation of tucson: 2389
elevation of sierra vista: 4633

a little bit of a difference...ya think that might be it.

guess i'll be making a trip to tucson and forking out more $$$$

That almost sounds like your accelerator pump is not set right (or on to much). Try turning it in then backing it out 1 1/2 turns and see what happens. Careful turning it in, you only want to go till it touches the pump arm.

Later,
Ray
