1) There are multiple problems with the speedo and tach, mine will say 40mph at a stop light, then start working fine. Since your engine died that sounds more serious, have a diagnostic ran if you are able.

2) Sounds like your clutch hub nut. These bikes are famous for this issue. If you are mechanically inclined, search the How To forum, if not get it in to a shop because after mine made that noise I had about 40 shifts left before I was stranded.

TRUE COLORS COLLISION
I agree with the above statements from Toadstool....both of the same things happened to me as you are describing and the remedies are listed above...........as for the bike dying while riding and the things happening on speedometer in my ehc connectors one pin had failed and somehow rusted and broke away leaving me with part time connection....some days were better than others, discovered the problems while going through the connections and replaced the pin with a paper clip which allowed me to ride until dealer got me a new EHC....

the first issue sounds like what happens when the rpms go too low - were you stopped or idling when this happened?

The second issue could be the clutch hub nut but try adjusting it first. What year bike is it?

As stated above a lot of things can cause the speedo & tach problems. Loose wires, bad battery, corrision on the tack board. Like lee said try adjusting the clutch first and if shifts better then gets worst again, pull the primary cover and check the clutch hub nut for looseness. There are some "how to" in the technical sections that will help you.
