turn signals and back firing

Hey everyone....

Got my bike (K9) out o the shop Saturday and brought her home....weather is started to turn....Slowly getting used to the bike....Great ride...didn't want to stop riding...lol

Forgot if I asked you guys this questions before:

1. Do the turn signals go off while sitting at a traffic light, where you have to keep hitting the button to turn them on again...they will blink for 5-6 times and then go off, and then I hit the button again to keep it going....normal???.....My harley will stay on until you move the bike and then the signal will turn off....

2. As I down shift or let off the gas the motor back fires through the pipes....normal???...I have big radius pipes on there with S&S tear drop air cover and filter....

Mine does both. I think it may blink a few more times but pretty much does that.

my bike is a 03 and the blinkers continue to flash when the brake is held, they go off if it is released. I'm not sure on the 08's. Your back fire is called decel pop. Its pretty common.

Red....yeah...the turn signals self cancel after 10 seconds once the bike is put in gear and brakes are released:up:

The length of time on the 05's are programable also for the turn signals. 08's most likely the same.

Yeah so if you have either brake on or in nuetral they stay blinking.

Check the how to on the carb adjustment to help witht he back firing. However, it is the curse of the V&H BR.

I believe the dealer can set the blinkers to flash more or less depends what you want, thay told me mine set @ ten times if i wanted it changed let them know & thay would reprogram

popping on decel with those pipes is normal but not so sure about on the downshift. Mine started doing that and my exhaust had come loose - you may have an exhaust leak so check your torque at the heads.

OK, will do on checking on the pipe leak and I did read some info on here about adjusting the carb...I'll look into it....yeah down shifting does it...any kind of back presure you put on the motor it back fires...but could be cold weather also...it is cold where I am in MD...when I first took it out of the shop and went for a few miles there was really no back firing...but as I rode and I guess being in the cold air might have done that as well the back firing became more so.......I also noticed as I went that the motor did more ticking...you could hear it coming from the heads....but as I read in here they make noise and that could be normal....same with Harleys...got to get used to it....plus now I have no fairing...so got to get used to that as well....which is cool...I'm loving it...getting use to it...it gets better each time I go out on her...

I'll count the turn signal time just to be sure as I'm sitting at idle with my brake on and then off and in neutral as well...I never go into neutral at a light anyway...always first...and keeping my eyes on my mirrors..lol....just me..lol

remember that cold air is denser so in the winter you may need to up your jet size

On my 09 Mastiff, the blinker will flash 10 times and cancel. If you have the brake on, they stay on. (This is in the owners manual).

The popping back is due to the less restrictive exhaust allowing some air to travel back up in the pipe when you let off the throttle at the higher RPM. The air creates an explosive pop (unburned gas on hot metal with the added air). This is more noticible in cold weather. Solution here is shift to the next gear or pull in the clutch earlier. It's just a matter of riding time and habits on the dog causing this.

If you get a lot of popping back, carb might need to be adjusted a little. Take it to the dealership, but basically, it's going to pop back (exhaust). That's just a small part of the BR exhaust.

In this cooler weather, I just might do the decel thing to annoy people in cages as I am coming up to a light.

Red, if you didn't get an owners manual they are available for download on the BDM website.

I'm with you on the stoplight in first gear!!!! I'm not getting rear ended if I can help it.

As for the carb, they are easy to tweak. But first know where all your current settings are. Turn the air/fuel screw in counting the turns then put it back. Do the same with the accelerator pump. Usually we turn the pump off for tuning though. They are easy to play with and you won't break anything but make small changes with one thing at a time till you get it where you want it.

Popping can be associated with loose exhaust pipes so check them to ensure they are tight and not leaking. Then turn out the air/fuel mixture screw a bit and see if that helps.
