Trashed Transmission

When your transmission takes a dump and your bike is out of warranty what is the best way to handle getting it fixed. Send to the factory, have a local dealer fix it, send to Baker, or what? If the factory or Baker is the best option what is the turn around time?

Check with Baker but you'll probably have to go thru BDM. Call BDM, see if they will cover it, then it will have to go to a dealer and they will ship the tranny to the factory.

Local dealer will send it back to BDM who will forward it to Baker who will rebuild it.

It's about a month of downtime when mine took a shit.

So far, without yours, about 13 mainshafts have broken on our bikes.....

Let us know if that is what is wrong with yours and, I'll add you to the list if that is the case. Check in the drivetrain forum for the threads.

I posted about this a while back.
I don't know why it would have to go thru BDM when your warranty is up.

I was told by a shop in Phoenix that most of the tranny warranties were longer than the bike manufacturer and that you could have a local shop do the repair.

No one ever came up with an answer.

Let us know what you do

is the problem though that the trans on our bikes is not a regular Baker trans? it has been "BDM'd"!

Sounds like the problem is the bolt came loose on the countershaft. I need to pull the inner/outer primaries and check it out. Anyone else have this issue?

Call BDM and tell them. On my trans. the gear on the countershaft moved and it was stuck in third gear. Didn't want to down shift or upshift. You could get it to downshift after a lot of pushing and shifting of the shifter, but once you started upshifting it would hang up in third. My dealer called BDM and told them the problem. BDM knew exactly what it was and stated they have had some issues with trans. They told me I could pull the trans. or have the dealer pull it and they would fix it for free. They also said that they needed to do some upgrades to the trans. If the dealer pulled it, I would have to pay the dealer for labor. I was also out of warranty. My dealer called Saturday and said the trans. was back and he would have it ready Saturday afternoon. Mine was at the dealers almost a month. It took almost three weeks to get it back from BDM. Going to go get it this weekend. Hope this helps.

Well, here's the latest.

We found that the nut that holds the clutch onto the main shaft is soft and it started to wear thin and the clutch assembly started to come loose on the shaft. Then when that happened the clutch assmbly started moving on the splines and destroyed the main shaft, and the inner hub on the clutch.
so now i need a new main shaft, new clutch assembly, all the bearings, spacer, seals etc. it's a good thing i am putting in a Bandit clutch assembly already. It would be a good thing to have your nut looked at. These things are soft and will wear over time. Need to use a hardend nut or hardened washer at the least. Also the pawl adjustment was way off as well. The Redline Shock Proof Oil works great. All other internal componenets look great! I talked to Baker and they say to use this oil as well.

Ok... will have the wife inspect the next time she's down there. I think it works better this way and adds to the hardness of the goods and helps me get my nut. Then I'll have her give me a good wash! :whoop:
