The age old question - Sterling v. Seatmaker

As some of you know, earlier this year I had Scott (seatmaker) chop my ridgeback seat to make it lower profile and much better looking. Here are the photos: http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/seat-leather/32396-08-ridgeback-seat-chopped.html
He did a great job and was a pleasure to work with. I have no complaints about the seat and Scott did exactly as I asked. It was something that had not been done before. The quality of work is excellent.

Then my wife began complaining that the pillion was not comfortable for 2-up riding. So I called Scott about making a second seat. It wasn't really an option as Scott doesn't stock the seats. I would have to buy it and ship it to be be recovered. As a result, I called Sterling. He makes the entire seat. I asked him to make me a 2-up seat that was extremely comfortable and matched my paint. Essentially, I wanted the same design that Scott made but more comfortable since this bike is my "touring" bike. Well I received the seat and Sterling also knocked it out of the park. Great seat, very comfortable and great quality. He turned the job around quick and my wife was thrilled with "her" new gift. She said its most comfortable she has been on any of the 3 bikes I have owned. While the chopped seat looks better due simply to the profile (this true for any comparison of a solo vs. 2-up seat in my opinion), the 2-up seat is exactly what we need to take this bike on trips. It also looks pretty good because the seat itself is a nice focal point. I don't think anyone could have done a better job than Sterling did.

In the end, I would say that both are great to work with and do top notch work. I will post photos tomorrow of the Sterling seat so all of you can make your own assessment as to the quality of the seats. Looking at the two nearly identical designs should help you make a decision as to who you want to do your custom work. My opinion is that you can't go wrong with either. How's that for not answering the age old question - make your own decision.

Sounds good would like to hear your trip report on the seat. It sounds like it will be good for the wife. Right now on my stock seat im about 300 miles before I'm walking funny, the lady friend last about 200 miles on the pad and doesn't want to get on the next day

Curious if the 2 up is THAT much better than the solo and ppad with gel.

And seatmaker's work:

Again, both really did a great job. Also, sorry for my horrible photography skills.

By far more comfortable than the pillion we have.

I asked my wife for her honest opinion and she thinks Sterling's stitching is better quality. It is more fine and precise, but both look great.

Damn those look good!!! I love both your seats!

I really like that slimmed down seat any noticable difference in comfort? I think I might be going down the same road as you 2 up for the lady and cut my solo!

Kudo's to both guys!

Brian,

Thank you for the kind words and taking the time to post the pictures of your new seat. It was a pleasure working with you. I am pleased to read that your wife appreciated the comfort of the customized passenger portion. I can gaurantee that you will feel the same about your modified seating area. Thank you once again for your business. I look forward to working with you in the near future...maybe a matching backrest pad?

Sincerely,

Sterling

Both seats look great! I'm a single rider though so, I like the solo more especially after Scott trimmed it... :D :2thumbs:

I had Sterling do mine and a fine job they did, good communications good end result. I had him do a twoup – solo with matching lick & stick with backrest. It’s like clothes for the ride. Everyone loves the seats and asks where and how much, I always tell them about both options Seatmaker & Sterling :2thumbs: :flag::flag::flag:

Both are very nice and I know Seatmakers excellent work because he has made one for me. The two up looks like it would give me some much needed back support.

Has the two up been modified for more back support? it looks like the back is higher than the stock seats.

by the images (albeit crappy images :D) both look like qualkity product so I would think you couldn't go wrong having either craftsmen working on your seat!

I've finally figured out the design I want on my seat... and I'll be working with Sterling since he is an advertiser. I love what he has done with other seats along with the rave reviews.

Both seats look great.

Moog, I hope you don't mind if I go off topic. I am having no luck finding a sissybar for my 06 K-9. Has anyone ever seen a 2 up seat where the passenger seat goes up vertically and imitates a sissybar? Would that look good or stupid?

Sterling and Seatmaker, please chime in.

Thanks Moog
