As some of you know, earlier this year I had Scott (seatmaker) chop my ridgeback seat to make it lower profile and much better looking. Here are the photos: http://www.bigdogbiker.com/forums/seat-leather/32396-08-ridgeback-seat-chopped.html
He did a great job and was a pleasure to work with. I have no complaints about the seat and Scott did exactly as I asked. It was something that had not been done before. The quality of work is excellent.
Then my wife began complaining that the pillion was not comfortable for 2-up riding. So I called Scott about making a second seat. It wasn't really an option as Scott doesn't stock the seats. I would have to buy it and ship it to be be recovered. As a result, I called Sterling. He makes the entire seat. I asked him to make me a 2-up seat that was extremely comfortable and matched my paint. Essentially, I wanted the same design that Scott made but more comfortable since this bike is my "touring" bike. Well I received the seat and Sterling also knocked it out of the park. Great seat, very comfortable and great quality. He turned the job around quick and my wife was thrilled with "her" new gift. She said its most comfortable she has been on any of the 3 bikes I have owned. While the chopped seat looks better due simply to the profile (this true for any comparison of a solo vs. 2-up seat in my opinion), the 2-up seat is exactly what we need to take this bike on trips. It also looks pretty good because the seat itself is a nice focal point. I don't think anyone could have done a better job than Sterling did.
In the end, I would say that both are great to work with and do top notch work. I will post photos tomorrow of the Sterling seat so all of you can make your own assessment as to the quality of the seats. Looking at the two nearly identical designs should help you make a decision as to who you want to do your custom work. My opinion is that you can't go wrong with either. How's that for not answering the age old question - make your own decision.
