Talk to me Goose-New Road King?

Here's the deal. I got time and money on my hands and time for a new toy. I've had my '01 Mastiff since '02. It only has 13 thou miles on it but times being what they are it ain't gonna bring more than $6 thou or so. I don't care, I moved to NC from WA where I can now ride a bike. Since the Mastiff was re-wired 10 years ago I have not had one problem with her, but the ride isn't as comfortable as I need in my old age. Haven't had a Harley in about 20 years (been riding 50 years) and wanna go back for the comfort. Don't care about image, speed etc. I'm fat and old and want comfort. Thinking about going for a Road King (don't like riding with windshields). Looks like I can get a fairly good trade in and HD will bring my money back when I want to sell it in 5 years or so. Want to get a new '16. Haven't been following them so don't know about problems. Anyone with knowledge. Don't want to hear about customs etc. I've had at least 20 customs and choppers over the years. Just getting too old and wanna plant my fat ass on comfort and ride 300 miles. I know the Mastiff has a swing arm, but it just ain't the same.

I got a 2012 streetglide that is just about as comfortable as they get and a very short windshield. Both the roadking and the heritage have a quick detach windshield. Probably want to check out the abs brakes, they are nice. Good luck with your search.

What part of North Carolina you calling home now.

I'd take a SG over a RK anyday. I like the fairing and if your looking for pure comfort not sure how you beat an SG.

I always wanted a RK so about 6 years ago I bought one. The very first thing I noticed is the passenger pegs are real close to the front floor boards so when you push it forward your ankle gets stuck under the passenger peg and you can break your ankle easily. (ask me how I know).

The second thing is it was high for me with a 32" inseam so I had to lower it which made it scrape on corners.

The third thing I noticed is it wouldn't get out of it's own way. Nothing like my 107 S&S. almost got killed trying to pass taking it home.

So you may want to be aware of this when you test drive one. My favorite bike now is my Roadstar. It's light, smooth, fast and very comfortable. It always starts and runs like a raped ape. I have only $7k in it. You could keep the dog and get a RS for the longer trips.

I've also read where Harley is having problems with the ABS brakes and the water cooled heads. you may want to google that.

Good luck!

Friend of mine has always rode RK's. 20 plus years and trading every year. In 2012, he decided to try a Street Glide. He said he will never go back to a RK. If you want the wind in your face, SG won't give you that but if you want comfort it will. I have a SG for trips and the K9 for the short stuff. Like them both

I hear you. I was just at my local HD dealer looking at a 2012 Street Glide. Only $17,000 Not sure if I will trade in my fxwg or my Dog? Depends on what they will give me on a trade in.

TheThe will probably give you more for the Harley than the dog. Unless one of the shop guys wants your dog. The 2 dealers near my house don't really want to take them on a trade.

Problem with the dogs is Harley dealers don't want any bikes 10 years old because they can't be financed through their normal channels. Makes it a cash only deal for them which is a tough sale to make for 10-12k.

Getting to the outer range on 10 years got 07 and 08 left. Once we hit 2019 dream machines won't even take the later dogs.

I just purchase a new 2016 Street Glide about a month ago. Had the shop put on Vance and Hines power headers, exhaust, modified intake racing tuner and CVO wheels (all covered by 5 extended warranty). Traded in my 2008 Mastiff (price was fair considering). Will definitely miss the Dog (Horsepower/Looks) but I too am not getting any younger. Between work and family illnesses I do not have time to wrench like I used too and was looking for a bike with a warranty and also a place to bring it in to when service is needed. After the bikes I had in the past my family could not believe I now own a bagger but it does have it's advantages. I plan on using it to go to work more than I did when I had the "Dog". I am sure I will have some regrets but only time will tell. Bruce
