Tachometer Ring

A couple of weeks ago my left turn indicator/power up dash light went out. Today when I started the bike all tachometer ring/annunciator lights are out except the oil & neutral light (different ground). All lights on the bike work fine just the Tach Ring/annunciator Lights, RPM, turn indicator/power up lights, & blue high beam. Is this normal when the tach ring goes out. I haven't investigated yet. I ordered some new tank grommets from HDM, got a little shaking going on and thought I might drop in the new tach ring out of Wichita if I see no wire issues. They talk about a new surface mount LED Tach ring. Does anyone know about this new surface mount tach ring for the carbureted for my 2006 Pitbull? Is a surface mount any different than what we have now? Does this require any modification?

The tach circuit is very fragile and highly prone to failure. I haven’t heard about a new version. They are all surface mount LED’s, so not sure the relevance.

The turn, oil, Neutral, Hi, are all independent LED’s. Very unusual and unlikely to fail. Might be another concern if they are not working

Pull the Tachometer Pcb and check the base where the connectons are make. You may have corrosion and get away with cleaning it off.

Yes, thank you. I'm going to pull the gas tank off and replace the grommets and I will pull the speedo assembly and check all wiring and connections. I've just got to make the time to do it. Living on 5 acers, being 75, self employed my work list never quits. The mechanic that works on my work trucks just slipped and hurt his back and arm. I expect he will be down for some time. My wife is 81 and tripped on a tree root. She is wearing a orthopedic boot. I just finished vacuuming the house now to go work on my work truck. I know that's too much information and you probably didn't want to know but getting old isn't easy.

Thank you for your reply, if I have a little corrosion would electrical cleaner be good? My wife about 5 years ago stepped in a small hole and broke her ankle. She had to crawl about 150 feet to the house. She had to have a plate with screws in her ankle. This is the same foot she just tripped and fell putting all her weight on it. I'm glad she doesn't need surgery. Thanks. Ron

Yes the electrical cleaner should be good. Just be gentle and you should be OK.
I agree surgery would be really bad news in the recovery time to get back to normal.

I finally got around to pull the tach ring. My purple and black wire had come loose from vibration. I sure like twisting the throttle occasionally. How can something be soldered that small? Has anyone been successful? I went ahead and dropped in a new tach ring but will save the old one.

Find a tv or electronics shop. They can solder those tiny connections. I got no dog in this fight but here is a place you could start?

One of the old ones.
I went to a local car audio shop—guy fixed me right up— the lead for the license plate bracket light broke at the unit. Had me fixed up and out of there in 15 minutes for 10 bucks—those guys solder tiny wires in small places all day long and they’re good at it……
